A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. For the student’s future, the confidence from succeeding in a subject can flow into other aspects of their lives, allowing them to help others. I am…

Creating a wanting to learn. No child will improve grades if they do not want to learn and that comes from my own personal experience. Therefore the most important thing for me is that I can help a student enjoy learning and then through that passion myself and the student can enjoy seeing improvements in their learning and grades. It’s also…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Learning new things can be overwhelming and thus remembering that your students are trying to grasp new knowledge every second is often overlooked. Being a student myself, I know the importance of needing to know even the smallest details but also finding it…

Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their full confidence. Knowledge can bring confidence and strength to a person. Amidst the competitive pressure of institutions on this generation's children, one of the vital things a tutor can do for a fellow student is to provide a safe space for them to be able to express themselves, i.e allowing them to ask questions and understand the weaknesses of their students. That way they will be enthusiastic to learn from their…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. A tutor is more than just one that imparts knowledge. Any textbook, podcast or Youtube Video can do that. The power of a good tutor is in his or her ability to strengthen and encourage their students, so helping them gain some momentum to keep persevering in subjects that are challenging them. This means patiently helping the students understand…

To help the student form a routine and improve performance in the school. Teaching the skill of learning and eventually working towards independence is very important to me. Listening to a student is the most important thing a tutor can do. It allows you to prepare better for future sessions and meet the needs of the students. It also helps you modify your teaching approach to keep the students engaged in the class. I believe my approach to teaching is efficient as I break down concepts to the basics and use multiple…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a safe, supportive environment and to make learning feel achievable and enjoyable. A tutor should listen, be patient, and find ways to connect lessons to each…

Inside GlendaloughTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Michael focused on multiplication and division strategies, including using number lines to visualise equal groups.

In Year 6, Grace worked through fractions and decimals, applying these to solve everyday money problems.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Lily tackled perimeter and area calculations alongside practice with algebraic expressions for missing numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without having attempted their homework, which meant less time could be spent addressing specific difficulties in algebra.

In Year 10, one student struggled to plan effectively for a test—"he didn't check his answers before submitting," as noted—which led to repeated calculation errors in trigonometry questions.

For a Year 4 learner, working in her head rather than writing steps down caused forgotten calculations during long division.

Another senior student showed declining focus after setbacks; "her concentration was good for the first half but faded," making it harder to master advanced fractions by session's end.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glendalough recently saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with algebra start to grasp the process of solving equations independently, even choosing to tackle more challenging questions without prompting.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to avoid worded maths problems now approaches them confidently and can break down double-digit multiplication tasks with far less hesitation.

Meanwhile, one of our younger students, after weeks of shyness about reading aloud, surprised her tutor by volunteering to read the next chapter during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cambridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chrysalis Montessori School.
