I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

Responsibility is the first word that comes to my mind. I come from Vietnam, and I have seen very few Australian students who require a tutor, comparing to Vietnamese students. If they hire a tutor, they must have a need to improve their academic performance. Hence, a tutor needs to be responsible for them to achieve a better result. I cannot…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is an ability to relate to students and to make them feel comfortable, enticing them to learn. From here, this factor will allow students to learn to the best of their ability and make the most of their time with the tutor. As a tutor, my main strength would be my ability to help students…

I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Most importantly a tutor should be ready to explain a single concept even 10 times to students if they are not able to get that without getting annoyed Well , I'm quite patient which I think is my biggest strength…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

A tutor has the opportunity to encourage confidence in students. Not solely confidence that they can achieve highly, but confidence that they can give anything a go and learn and improve as they do. A tutor can present things in an engaging way to encourage the student to be open-minded to things they may have discounted because they seem…

Recognising what the student requires and teaching it accordingly is one of the critical teaching factors. After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

We are very happy with everything and things are going well. James is a great tutor and my son has been very comfortable and getting a lot out of the tutoring every week.

Inside Glenelg SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student James worked through NAPLAN numeracy practice, focusing on ordering decimal numbers to three places and exploring the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

In Year 10, Alex tackled simultaneous equations by solving using both graphical and algebraic methods, and reviewed functions and relations as part of their algebra work.

For Year 5, Finn practised X3 and X5 multiplication facts along with subtraction of decimal numbers to two places with exchanging, while also beginning to learn about metric prefixes for units of measurement.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student struggled to keep derivative and anti-derivative formulas distinct during calculus sessions; as a tutor noted, "he mixed up the stuff," which led to repeated confusion in problem-solving.

In Year 9, James hesitated with exponential equations because key formulas weren't memorized—each unfamiliar question meant extra time flipping through notes instead of building confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student found subtraction with exchanging daunting, particularly when multi-step word problems required both careful layout and number fact recall.

After holidays, one Year 5 learner needed targeted revision just to refresh basic times tables before tackling new content.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenelg South recently noticed some great shifts: a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on ratio questions now tackles them independently and even asked for extra practice problems this week.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who struggled with setting up her first assignment was able to solve most of the next two assignments on her own after learning new strategies.

On the primary side, one younger student who previously guessed at unknown words during reading is now pausing to use word attack skills and checking punctuation out loud as he reads.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
