The fundamental thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach and monitor the progress of a child. I call it teaching with a commitment. Aside from the broad aspects of teaching, there are other things that a tutor can do like listening to the student. What are his struggles? How does he feel towards the subject? Knowing the weaknesses of the…

From my point of view and based on my prior experience in this field, the most important and fair thing that a tutor is liable to do is to clarify the main concept to the learner first and then start solving relevant questions without jumping to this stage straightway. Tutor should ensure that the learner has learned the main points of concept…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for students is to listen, which helps us understand their needs and enables us to help them effectively. I also think preparation on a tutor's part is a very important part of the relationship with a student. I would consider myself to be a great listener, which comes in handy in tutoring and I my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s self-confidence. Often, the biggest barrier to learning is the fear of being 'bad' at a subject. A great tutor removes that fear by creating a structured environment where the student feels in control of their progress. Active listening to identify exactly where the gaps in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to persevere in times of academic adversity. This is because if a student cannot believe in themselves, they won't be able to achieve their true capabilities. Only after this encouragement can students reach for the stars. My strength as a tutor involves my position as a…

A tutor must be able to answer and tend to a student questions or doubts. Without this, more questions and doubts can build up and cause stress and anxiety. Convenience is also important. A student may not be able to ask their teacher for help, so being able to answer those unanswered questions without having them wait would certainly boost their…

A tutor can induce confidence about the right things a student is supposed to know. Understand the feelings and character of different students. Some students who tutor may be gifted, however there are many also who may are demotivated and have a low-self esteem which causes them to believe they aren't good enough to excel. I believe tutors should change the perspective from studying from an extrinsic desire, for instance, marks…

Margret, Glenwood

Inside GlenwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aryan worked through fraction operations—adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions—and practised connecting percentages to decimals and fractions.

For Year 8, Alisha focused on finding the surface areas and volumes of composite solids using notes and worksheets, along with reviewing formulas for prisms.

In senior secondary, Maya (Year 11) completed HSC exam preparation by tackling varied past paper questions and clarifying major doubts in topics including trigonometry and statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra sessions, a student often left working incomplete when solving equations, which made it hard to spot where misunderstandings with variables arose. As one tutor observed, "she needs to talk aloud so the tutor can know which areas need improvement."

In a senior geometry lesson (Year 11), revision focused mostly on easier past exam questions rather than tackling harder bearings and proof problems—missing a chance to build deeper confidence before assessments.

A Year 7 student avoided writing out steps for fraction addition, leading to repeated denominator errors and confusion about simplifying answers during timed practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenwood noticed a Year 10 student who previously struggled with scatter plots now drawing them accurately and sharing that he'd received high marks on his topic test.

In a senior session, another student who tended to rely heavily on the tutor's help for algebra was able to tackle multi-step questions solo after a few alternate explanations—solving harder problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, during primary tutoring, one child who rarely asked questions started pausing to clarify things mid-task instead of pushing through confused, showing real initiative. The last session ended with her confidently converting fractions both ways on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanhope Garden Library/ Dennis Johnson Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caddies Creek Public School.
