I think the most significant thing that a tutor can do is to instill confidence in the student, make them able to learn, and independent learners. It's not providing them with the answers but making them see the 'why' about things. A good tutor listens, is attuned to the way of learning of the student, and gets them at ease asking questions and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is genuinely care for the child’s education and go out of their way to actually assist them. To provide adequate work to excel the child’s knowledge in the unfamiliar area. My strengths are that I am extremely patient, and that I understand what children find interesting and not…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to stay patient with him or her when they are not able get hold of a concept. That is what differentiates a great teacher from a good teacher. Students need to make mistakes in order to learn and it is responsibility of the teacher to stay patient while they are making mistakes and to also…

I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

I believe a good tutor has the ability to transcend their role as a tutor and become a role model for their students. Further, helping a student overcome their fears or challenges for a particular subject is incredibly helpful. I am able to connect with my students and understand their issues from their perspective. This allows me to curate my…

It is to build the student's confidence, create a safe space to learn without judgment, and adapt their teaching to fit the student' needs. It's not just about helping them understand a topic - it's about helping them believe that they can. Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

When a student feels seen, heard, and supported, they start to trust their own ability to learn and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just explain concepts they create a safe space…

I find that addressing the finer parts that students find more challenging is essential for a tutor. While students may have already covered the concepts in class, the learning process is often not tailored to their individual needs. A tutors role is to adopt a more personalised approach, taking the time to understand each student’s unique level…

We are very happy with Malmi and we are looking forward to having her next term from Saturday.
Faye, Gowanbrae

Inside GowanbraeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adam worked through identifying prime and composite numbers, and converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 8, Priya focused on algebra skills including factorization and solving linear equations, as well as graphing simple linear relationships.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Aiden practised long division with remainders and tackled adding mixed number fractions using visual aids for clarity.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion and organization presented issues across both primary and secondary levels. For example, a Year 7 student left several algebra and linear equation exercises unfinished, with notes showing "make a habit of doing homework (grade 5 and grade 7 yearly exam are given)."

In Year 8 maths, messy written work—especially in fractions and factorisation—made it hard to check steps or spot errors. As one tutor observed, "review the textbook questions that have been solved—cover up the workings and attempt again," but avoidance of reworking mistakes meant gaps persisted into new topics.

The impact was most noticeable during test preparation: confusion over missed steps slowed revision momentum.

Recent Achievements

One Gowanbrae tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 8 student's approach: after previously needing reminders to stay focused, she now independently completes her algebra and exponent exercises before the session ends.

In high school art, Louis moved from hesitating over digital tools to confidently experimenting with Photoshop for his Warhol-inspired project, even trying out new effects without prompting—he's now ahead of class milestones.

Meanwhile, Bella in Year 4, who used to rely heavily on step-by-step guidance for subtraction with borrowing, now works through problems on her own and checks her answers without being asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenroy West Primary School.
