I believe that a tutor should be able to help the student both grow as a person and mentally with their learning. In a hindsight, a tutor is someone they can trust and rely on with regards to getting help for homework, learning new concepts, and getting advice regarding exam and assessment task preparations. So as such, if the tutor can enable a…

Being supportive, encouraging and validating for sure. Providing constructive feedback all the time which enables a deeper and further understanding of the subject. Rewarding their achievements, which overall encourages them to do and achieve more. I think also being patient is crucial, this knowledge and subjects can be super hard sometimes, so…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient, understading and to listen. This allows for the student to be comfortable and be in a space where they can learn at an optimal rate and feel comfortable to ask any questions related to the work. I am understanding and have the ability to empathise with the student, allowing me…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them into identifying their strengths and weaknesses and helping them to improve both of these factors I believe my biggest strength is my ability to be patient with others. I believe in these times students lack the confidence and motivation that studying requires. They are continuously forced to learn new concepts rapidly. I am an attentive individual who specializes in perfecting a steady and solid base before moving to complex information. in this way, the student is confident to create steady incremental progress…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them confident about their greatest strengths. Often times, a student with great skill will be under performing and its the tutor's job to fix that. My greatest strength is that when I am teaching, I make sure my students feel absolutely comfortable to ask me questions. And I am…

Have the ability to adapt to the students needs. I understand that I may need to prioritise a students upcoming exam content over the schedule that we have discussed. To be able to explain concepts that seem complex to students, with clarity. Not only that, but to build a student's confidence in their own ability. Many students are not receiving the proper support they need for a particular subject at school; it may be too hard, it may not come off as interesting or it may not come off as useful to their…

I believe forming a mentor-mentee connection with the student is important in their learning experience as this enhances their motivation to learn and come to class every week. Also, I believe just being there for a student no matter what day or what time it is, is very important. As a fresh graduate myself, I know how stressful it can be…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to be able to teach a student methods of learning. It is important not just for the student to absorb the information being taught but also for the student to be able to break down problems and information. Teaching this skill to students to then carry onto into their careers and personal lives is…

Help a student not only do better or to learn further in a subject but to actually inspire them to want to study and do they best that they can. Because at the end of the day there is only so much a tutor can do, the student has to want to learn as well and thus inspiring to do so is the most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion. I believe…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and confidence. A student should feel comfortable asking questions without fear of being judged. Inside Gregory HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amelia focused on positive and negative integers using number lines, along with strategies for rounding numbers to different digit places.

In Year 8, Grace worked through laws of indices—both multiplication and addition—and revised algebraic techniques like simplifying expressions and solving linear equations, sometimes using past test questions for extra practice.

For Year 9, Nishta covered financial mathematics including calculating tax from bracket tables and practiced applying formulas for bonuses and commissions in a range of problem-solving scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on Pythagoras' Theorem was advised not to overwrite answers and to write formulae before starting—messy layout made it hard to catch calculation slips.

In Year 10, a student tackling algebraic fractions avoided writing full steps, as one tutor noted, "she skipped setting out her working, which led to rounding errors."

Meanwhile, an older student preparing for advanced algebra assessments had incomplete homework practice; this limited her ability to recall formulas under test conditions.

Across grades, missing or unfinished practice sums meant students often entered lessons without the familiarity needed for new problem types.

Recent Achievements

One Gregory Hills tutor saw a real turnaround with Mia, a high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help—she now uses "pen to paper" strategies and talks through problems instead of staying silent.

Analiese, also in high school, moved from being anxious about word problems to actually enjoying them after learning some new techniques; she worked out all her practice questions on her own last session.

In primary years, Ifra went from making repeated errors on arithmetic laws to fixing those mistakes independently and completing the assigned work without extra prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Narellan Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gregory Hills Public School.
