One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide assistance as that is the main objective of being their tutor, mentally, academically and emotionally. When I tutor students, I tend not to follow the same pattern or process of learning for every kid. I believe tutor can play huge role in a student’s life when it comes to teaching them how to fish rather than serving the fish. The ability to remain calm and composed in any situation I think is my biggest strength. Having to deal with kids who…

One of the most important things that a tutor, or any teacher, can do for a student is be there for them. By this, I mean tutors should be encouraging, supportive and understanding of students, as students can often have their downfalls (for instance, if they don't do as well as they hoped for in their exam). At times like this, students must be…

Support is definitely the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Homework can be frustrating and stressful when you don't understand a topic, and that makes motivation dry up fast! Truly listening to a student's needs and being flexible enough to alter plans for a lesson. Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do is to work with a student from a student's perspective. It is exactly the reason why group-studying is so effective as everyone is on the same wavelength. A tutor's job is to be able to "read" into the student's mind and solve-problems by comfortably adjusting and improvising…

Inside GymeaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia worked through simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced changing the subject of equations, using step-by-step substitution.

In Year 10, Adam tackled sketching reciprocal and cubic functions as well as exploring transformations in the number plane with guided examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex focused on calculus by practicing differentiation from first principles and applying short methods to a range of function types.

Recent Challenges

During a recent Year 7 session, a student arrived without their book, requiring the tutor to provide extra materials and adjust the lesson flow.

In Year 11 Maths, one student worked quickly but "missed transferring signs or numbers," which led to calculation errors that were only caught during review.

Another Year 12 Physics student struggled to organize written work when tackling multi-step problems; this made it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred.

A lack of regular homework completion was also noted in several cases—one Year 9 learner was given tasks for follow-up after not bringing finished practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Gymea tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to lose marks for sign errors now double-checks her answers without prompting, after specific feedback on number accuracy.

In a recent high school session, another student who hesitated to tackle challenge questions in trigonometry began independently attempting the tougher problems and showed real persistence before asking for help.

A primary-aged learner, previously reluctant to review her own work, has started going back through completed maths exercises to catch and fix mistakes on her own initiative—last lesson she found and corrected two calculation slips herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I'm happy to let you know that Domonic has been a great tutor. Nadine is very happy and feels comfortable learning with him.

Even as a trained classroom teacher, I found Ezymath's tutoring resources particularly helpful in dealing with struggling students. I would recommend the basic program to any student or parent as it is designed to help tutors systematically address common learning problems, and provide structure for the student. In addition to dealing with content knowledge, the Ezymath program encourages students to develop positive study habits, effectively engage with their regular teachers, and build confidence in academic learning that will continue to yield results long beyond their time with a tutor.

Things are going really well with Adam. Josephine is very comfortable with him and enjoys their lessons. He has been very helpful, friendly and supportive. We're really pleased its working out so well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miranda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gymea Technology High School.
