It is important that a tutor is patient and is willing to break concepts down. A student should not feel intimidated or stupid, which requires the tutor put aside their own ego. A tutor needs to be able to assess a student's knowledge level and start from there. Working one on one, tutors can make personal connections more than teachers can and…

A tutor could help the student reach his or her goal. Help them gain the required knowledge through various tasks. But the most important thing would be to provide a logical and sensible direction in which the student could continue. And also not to be too judgmental and see that every student has his or her different capabilities in reaching…

I think every student may take more or less time to understand the concept, depending on their capacity. A tutor should be understanding and supportive until the student can comprehend. A simpler language and friendly behaviour are also very important. I am very patient and listen to the student's questions and try to answer them to the best of my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve their relationship with studying to the point where it does not seem like a chore or a less pleasurable way to spend time. I find that there is often a lot of pressure, stress and negative emotions associated with grades, and it detracts from the journey of learning. By creating…

Adjusting to the needs of the students. One tutoring style might have worked for one student, but this does not entail that it will work for each and everyone of them. Additionally, it's providing a conducive learning environment for the student to be able to ask questions that they may have been scared or shy to ask during class. Being patient…

Give them the ability to learn by themselves The main strength I have as a tutor is that I am able to go about explaining the same concept multiple times, easily grasp any new concepts in the off chance I don’t already have an understanding, and that I have specific way of coaching people leaving them feeling good about themselves as opposed to…

I think the most important role of a tutor is to support the student in a way that makes learning less stressful and more achievable. Teaching a student in a way that they can learn instead of teaching in a way that the tutor is comfortable with, is essential for every tutor to do. A tutor plays a major role for a student to either like or dislike the subject. It is highly likely that a student will like a subject more if the tutor delivers it in a more conceptual and interesting manner. As a tutor, I think my strength is that I am able to quickly assess the level of understanding of my pupil and adapt myself to deliver the…

A tutor should support the student, help them feel confident, and make learning easier. It’s also important to teach in a way that helps the student think for themselves and not just give them answers. Encouragement and being understanding can go a long way. I’m patient, a good listener, and explain things in a way that’s easy to understand.…

Inside Harris ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student worked on addition and subtraction of double-digit numbers, with extra focus on using a number line for subtraction and strategies for borrowing.

In Year 10, Anika tackled advanced algebraic fractions—practicing addition, subtraction, and factorisation—and also expanded and simplified expressions involving surds.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Yash covered properties of the nucleus in Physics, specifically exploring nuclear fission and fusion through real-world examples from Module 8.

Recent Challenges

In Year 2 maths, one student's tendency to draw and become distracted during lessons led to unfinished subtraction tasks; "gets multiplication and division confused with addition and subtraction" was a concern when homework wasn't completed.

In Year 8 algebra, another learner avoided showing working for factorising surds—"remembering how minus signs and brackets must be used" became an issue when errors weren't visible.

A Year 12 physics student relied heavily on memory for Doppler effect formulas but struggled to recall them under HSC exam-style pressure, making it harder to benefit from feedback after practice questions.

Recent Achievements

One Harris Park tutor noticed a big change in a Year 8 student who, after initially struggling with expanding brackets, was confidently working through them independently by the end of their session and even began manipulating fractions more effectively.

Another high schooler recently asked several thoughtful questions about surds—a shift from earlier lessons when he hesitated to speak up—and then applied new rules across problems without prompting.

In a Year 4 lesson, a student who used to guess at double-digit subtraction is now using the number line method consistently and checks her own answers before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Granville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Oliver's Primary School.
