A tutor should be able to read the students mind if he fails to do so he has failed in his job. Understanding what the student needs and give the student what the student lacks and preserve and enhance what the student already has, this is what tutoring is all about. I like to employ new methods of teaching skills as per the student requirements…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is teaching content in a way that interests the student as engagement is a key factor when teaching. If something isn't engaging students will be uninterested leading to other problems My main strength is that I'm able to offer insights to certain problems I had come across as a student, by…

I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to which…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it is…

I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to start teaching them from the basics. I believe a good foundation is very important for any student to succeed in the long run. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

Inside HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily worked on fraction operations and consolidating her multiplication tables, using hands-on practice for both.

In Year 10, Matt focused on embedding quotes effectively in English essays about 'The Golden Age' and practiced planning analytical responses to prompts using graphic organisers.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam tackled quadratic equations by completing the square and applied the elimination method to solve simultaneous equations, also revisiting basic trigonometry concepts like SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student showed inconsistent completion of assigned homework for English SAC revision, which limited the depth of written feedback and skill consolidation; as a tutor noted, "Matt needs to improve completing his assigned homework tasks."

In VCE English, reliance on brief plans rather than detailed mindmaps or highlighting led to weaker essay introductions and difficulty embedding evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 maths student struggled with structuring working in fraction questions—"more practice is needed on fractions," the notes recorded—which slowed progress and sometimes hid small calculation errors.

Missed homework meant extra class time spent reviewing old ground instead of advancing skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawthorn noticed that Matt, a Year 11 English student, now completes all assigned homework ahead of lessons and brings thoughtful ideas to each session. He's even started using planning tables and flash cards on his own, which wasn't the case before.

In senior maths, Will has become much more independent with graphing linear relations; he used to need step-by-step support but recently translated equations into graphs without prompting.

Meanwhile, Ziggy (Year 8) showed a big shift by reading scenes from a play aloud with expression and then volunteering his interpretation of the characters' motives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorn West Primary School.
