I think there are a couple of important things a maths tutor can do for their student. The first is being a patient person who is going to push them to do the best they can, not rush them through their work. The second is being someone the student feels comfortable making mistakes in front of as mistakes are one of the most important parts to…

I think patience is the most important skill a maths tutor can have. Some students don't understand a concept right away, I had to have a concept explained to me multiple times before and if the tutor was patient I was not scared to ask. I think as I have been tutored before I knew what worked for me and what didn't so I could apply those ideas.…

In my opinion, there are two most important things that a maths tutor can do for a student. Firstly, a tutor should be able to help students reemphasize key ideas of main concepts so that students have a strong base knowledge. Understanding the main intuition fully is crucial for students to be confident in the subject and further build up more…

The most important things a maths tutor can do is help the student gain a proper understanding of concepts to aid all their personal study and school work. They should work to build a passion for the subject in the student so they begin to enjoy the study rather than see tutoring and studying as a hassle, which will help their exam performance…

I believe that a maths tutor should be extremely cautious in what they say; can everything be supported with a logical statement? Because the steps the tutors take to construct the answer are how the students learn from them, a tutor must prepare well and be confident and knowledgeable of what they are giving to the students. It's not about…

A tutor has to be understanding and respectful to the student that they are teaching, they need to realise that these individuals don't have the same level of knowledge as them at the time, so they need time to learn and understand difficult concepts and that require more explanation. The key is to build a strong healthy and friendly relationship…

Inside HeathcoteTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Imogen focused on multiplication and division, including double-digit problems, using step-by-step practice.

For Year 10, Alex worked through algebraic skills involving BIDMAS (order of operations) and practiced solving equations with percentages.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Maya reviewed Financial Maths concepts—such as annuities—and tackled past HSC questions on Critical Path Analysis to strengthen exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, one student hesitated to begin independent work without direct prompting, as noted: "she waited for my suggestion before starting each question." This reduced the opportunity to develop confidence in tackling unseen material.

A Year 11 Chemistry student left homework incomplete and rarely specified which areas needed targeted revision—making it harder to address gaps efficiently before exams.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 Maths student struggled with organizing working out clearly when converting decimals to percentages; missing steps often led to confusion and repeated errors. These habits sometimes meant more time was spent retracing old ground instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Heathcote tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate asking questions now openly seeks clarification when she hits confusing parts, which means she's finally tackling tricky maths problems head-on.

Another high schooler has started reviewing her old exam mistakes and can now clearly explain how she'd fix them—something she avoided before.

Among the younger students, one Year 5 learner began using her own notes to solve word problems independently, rather than waiting for hints.

Last session, that same student chose a new strategy on her own and finished all ten problems without errors.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I would just like to say that Reagan was very professional and very reliable.   He was well suited to my daughter for tutoring. She felt very comfortable with him and she did demonstrate  growth with her math. I would definitely recommend Reagan to other people.  The only other thing is that I regret not having done it sooner.

Just wanted to let you know that we have been super happy with Ben as a tutor for Callum.

Aisling is great with Roger, she is strict yet fairand keeps him on his toes. Roger's passion for school has improve since having 1 on 1 sessions with Aisling.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Engadine Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Heathcote High School.
