Establish the appropriate attitude towards studying. A tutor, besides supporting their student academically at the moment, should be able to build the learning culture by stimulating the student's curiosity and appreciation towards the subject and studying as a whole. A tutor must understand a student first. I also think making a lively session and lightening up the session helps release stress and increase the grasping power of students. A tutor must be a friend and a teacher so that the student is free to express difficulties if there are any. I think I can make understand a concept to a person in the way…

Help them with their growth as an overall human being, not just a student. This can be done by personally connecting with the student, not becoming just their teacher but someone they can talk to and rely on. I have a very deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in a subject. I know how to study for it, and what knowledge is required to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to really take time to listen to and understand the areas that they are struggling with so that they are not giving up valuable out of school time and not making progress - I firmly believe that play and rest is just as important as studying and working when you are a primary and…

I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I believe that the most important responsibility of a tutor is to inspire curiosity and passion for study among students. This can be done by making lessons much more interactive and fascinating, which will encourage them to study for themselves, not for the sake of someone else. Also, tutors should create an environment where students feel…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for the student. Unlike a teacher, the tutor has the luxury of being able to pace shift, and cater to the individual. Thus, taking absolute advantage of this 'power' is of the utmost importance, making sure that you, as a tutor, are meeting the needs of your student. I believe my strengths are…

The capacity to communicate in such a way that the learner feels driven, excited, and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along is one of the most crucial personal attributes of a competent instructor. In other words, a good tutor needs to be good with people, especially when it comes to engaging young kids in…

I think the most important aspect as a tutor is to listen to the student and foster independence. A tutor's job is to teach. However, I do believe that the student's experience during their time learning most important. Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
