First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is be patient, meaning a tutor should not rush the session along and cover another topic, if the student is not fully confident with what was already covered in the session. I believe this minimises stress for a student, as they are less likely to feel pressure to learn a topic they may find…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. A tutor needs to be able to clearly communicate with the student with their studies. There is little meaning if tutors do nut put in the effort to understand how the students think when they're studying. I have had experience in informal tutoring during high school. It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. That they understand the underlying concepts behind every problems they do. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

My main priority as a tutor has always been to develop a love, or at least form of passion, from the student regarding whatever I teach. From first hand experience I know that it is almost impossible to truly devote effort and time into a subject you can't stand. What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a safe and supportive environment for learning. A tutor’s role isn’t just to provide the right answers, but to help the student understand the reasoning behind them. It’s also important to…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
