A tutor plays a very important role in a student's life. A good teacher can put a life long impact on the growth and personality of a student. A tutor can be an inspiration to the student and always be there for him or her not only during the course but even after the course as a mentor for life. I believe the most important aspects of a tutor are to make learning enjoyable, to build confidence and to encourage a problem solving attitude. The more fun one can have learning, the more you want to try and work on your weaknesses. Being confident in yourself also improves the will to learn and problem solving builds resilience when answers…

To me, the role of a tutor transcends the mere transfer of knowledge. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a source of unwavering support, guidance, and inspiration. It's about fostering a profound sense of belief in a student's potential, even when they may doubt themselves. Ultimately, the most important thing a…

I think that helping a student understand the basic concept of what they are learning to ensure that they have a strong foundation for future learning. This may lead to a new appreciation for the subject matter. As well as ensuring that no student remains behind their year level to develop more nuanced future adults. I believe that I am able to…

Just being patient and understanding, giving time and attention with younger kids and respect with older ones. I think that's the best way to help them. I am quite patient so when a student finds it difficult, then I am willing to sit down and spend a lot of time on something until they get it. I am also good at showing multiple ways to solve each…

A tutor always have to do everything for a student to make him/her achieve their goals by being very patient and can communicate well with the students and their parents, try to find what the students lacks in and try to help in those areas. I know it might sound dramatic but a tutor could make a student what they will be in the near future a good…

Based on my experience, adopting a step-by-step approach that emphasizes understanding is the most effective way to teach concepts. Additionally, providing students with well-prepared notes and practice exercises is incredibly beneficial for their learning. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. First, a tutor should simplify complex concepts and explain them in ways that make sense to the student. It’s about making the subject less intimidating and more approachable. Second, building the…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. If a student can solve a problem on her own after a successful session, my job is well done. Patience , Adaptability, Challenging…

I believe that the most important responsibility of a tutor is to inspire curiosity and passion for study among students. This can be done by making lessons much more interactive and fascinating, which will encourage them to study for themselves, not for the sake of someone else. Also, tutors should create an environment where students feel…

I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
