I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. This helps create a supportive atmosphere that can hopefully allow the student to reach their potential. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

From my experience, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to create a safe learning environment by providing clear explanation and tailored guidance based on the academic needs which can help the student build the confidence in not only conquering their present challenges but also how to approach these challenges on their own.…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to inspire his inner confidence and nurture his talent. It is worthwhile to bring students to the realization that, nothing is impossible when they apply their minds to anything. Nurturing young minds and sowing seeds that will engender innovation is the ultimate role of a tutor. In this…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

Inside HeathpoolTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Armando worked through solving **simultaneous equations** and applying geometry skills to perimeter and area problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on bivariate statistics by analysing **line of best fit**, calculating least squares regression, and interpreting interpolation and extrapolation using her calculator.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Tom reviewed **exponential regression** for a bivariate statistics assignment and practised financial modelling with real-life examples such as loan calculations and offset accounts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student's written working in matrix calculations was often hard to follow—labels and steps were missing, making it easy to miscopy numbers.

For a Year 11 assignment, uncertainty about task requirements led to confusion: "he agreed to check/clarify with his teacher," but the delay slowed progress.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student preparing for exams relied heavily on calculator graphs without always adjusting scales or double-checking results; this meant errors sometimes went unnoticed until revision.

Across all years, moments of low confidence after setbacks have led some students to avoid unfamiliar problem types during independent practice.

Recent Achievements

One Heathpool tutor noticed that Armando, a high school student, recently bounced back after missing lessons due to illness by arranging extra meetings with his teacher and showing strong understanding in statistics and financial concepts—he even scored a B+ on two practice exams and could pinpoint areas for further improvement himself.

Another high schooler, Alia, who used to hesitate at the start of new problems, now attempts all worksheets independently before seeking help and has kept organised summaries for each topic; she achieved 87% in her last test.

In Year 7, one student confidently plotted graphs independently of linear relationships without guidance for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville High School.
