Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

The most important you can do for a student is to know their abilities and work their capabilities to make them better at the subject they're trying to get better at. It is also important to understand every student is different and not all of them can grapple a concept quickly. But as a tutor, I must make sure I am accounting for each students…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. I believe this process of problem solving is what learning is centred around, it ensured students retain the information they learn and know it for what it is instead of just to…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to motivate the student and provide constant encouragement when the student is feeling demotivated. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

Support and encourage. In order to support them mentally and emotionally, you have to have patience, perseverance and, of course, the knowledge. As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

Inside HendraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lily practised fractions, multiplication and division, as well as exploring highest common factor (HCF), lowest common factor (LCF), and basic percentages through real-life word problems.

In Year 9, Josh focused on solving simultaneous equations and quadratic equations using algebraic techniques.

For Year 11, Jackson worked through the Sine and Cosine Rule for non-right angled triangles and completed assignment tasks involving graphing exponentials.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student avoided writing out full working in complex algebra, which led to small but persistent sign errors—he skipped showing steps in factorization, which hid mistakes until the final answer.

In Year 8, another student's worded problem solutions were hard to follow due to disorganized layout; steps were jumbled and sometimes missing.

A Year 5 learner lost confidence after making mistakes in mental arithmetic and hesitated to trust their own calculations during multiplication drills.

When feedback was provided on a draft assignment for a senior student, notes weren't consistently applied before submission, leaving repeated gaps unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Hendra tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who previously lost marks for rushing assignments; this time, she set out her maths answers methodically and explained each step, leading to fewer careless errors.

In Year 8, a student who once hesitated to ask for help now regularly checks their reasoning on challenging geometry problems—she'll pause and request clarification instead of guessing through the question.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 2 grew comfortable reading numbers up to 40 aloud and has started initiating conversations during lessons without prompting, which is a first for him.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

With an interest in communicating the knowledge i've learnt, I looked towards tutoring. It was an opportunity to not only help student learning from personal experience, but improve upon the knowledge of subjects I'm interested in. With encouragement and providing opportunities to improve tutoring skills, Ezy Math tutoring was a perfect place to start my tutoring career. 18th July 2012

Working with Ezy Math Tutoring was great because all tutors are continuously supported in various ways. It is not only a teaching experience but also a learning experience. Tutors gain skills through work, weekly training and materials online. The continuous communication between tutors, students, parents and Ezy Math Tutoring is very important and valuable. 19th July 2012

Throughout my employment I received many helpful pieces of information from Ezy Math Tutoring, which detailed clever teaching strategies and techniques to help my students achieve their best. Using lesson plans to organise and prepare for my lessons is something that I was encouraged to do by Ezy Math Tutoring, which I hadn't used with students previous to my time with this company. This was very helpful both for me to have a clearer idea of my goal for each lesson, and also for my students to better understand what our aims were each week. During my employment it was evident that Ezy Math Tutoring always sought the satisfaction and best for its students as well as its tutors. It was a pleasure to work with this company. 19th July 2012

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hendra State School.
