I feel sometimes the whole syllabus or some questions might look overwhelming at first for a student so often they need guidance to get started. Breaking down the syllabus or even a problem in smaller parts has often helped them. I think preparing them on how to face a question is one of the most important things a tutor should do for a student.…

Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand them. Learning new things can be overwhelming and thus remembering that your students are trying to grasp new knowledge every second is often overlooked. Being a student myself, I know the importance of needing to know even the smallest details but also finding it…

The best thing a tutor can provide their student is to give them the guidance and inspiration so as to spark a curiosity to want to learn more about the subject without any external guidance. A tutor can help students how to learn, so that it not only helps them in the teaching period, but also down the line for life. A teacher can and should also build confidence within a student. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, especially in subjects relating to the sciences or math, is to properly build the foundations of the subject. Often it is the response from students that they'll never have to remember or use the content they learn again in their life, but that misses the fact that the act of learning these subjects, establishes a new kind of problem solving brain-wiring in your mind. It's not always important what you learn (depending on your career choice) but rather…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Inside HerdsmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ava worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, along with strategies for solving worded problems involving measurement.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and expanded brackets using step-by-step written methods.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lily explored trigonometry basics and practiced applying sine and cosine rules to solve right-angled triangle questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's algebra progress was slowed by inconsistent homework completion—"failed to complete all homework questions," one note recorded.

In Year 10, careless handling of negative signs in calculations led to repeated errors; as observed, "details, careless mistakes" meant that time was spent fixing issues rather than moving forward with new concepts.

For a Year 7 student working on linear graphs, unclear written work and skipping question details made extracting the required information difficult, which disrupted understanding.

Meanwhile, in upper primary maths, forgotten multiplication tables left one student hunting for answers instead of building fluency.

Recent Achievements

One Herdsman tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to skip steps now carefully reads each question before starting calculations, leading to fewer careless mistakes in statistics problems.

In Year 8, another student has started bringing completed homework every session and recently tackled balancing equations without prompting—she'd previously needed reminders just to start.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with her 8 and 9 times tables last term can now recall them quickly and managed all the related questions without any hesitation during the lesson.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

No news is good news - we are very happy with Eddie! Thankyou for following up but all is great from our perspective. Thanks again

Yes Jamie seems happy with Daniel's tuition and did well in his maths test following Daniels first tuition session.

All is good, thanks.  Tim is really enjoying his sessions with Kat, and she is very good with him. Many thanks,

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cambridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chrysalis Montessori School.
