Guide my students, rather than teach him. The most important thing I can do for my students is to try my best to teach, so I can see their change day to day. I am very patient and perseverance, a tutor cannot be anxious to students, we need to give him some time to digest the knowledge. And I am very kind to…

The most important things I am concerned about are my students’ progress and emotions, often even over results. If someone is reluctant to learn, which can be common in the volunteering programs I mentored at, then I believe first building a relationship, understanding why, and to provide engagement may be more important. Nonetheless, if a…

Trying to understand the student and their difficulty in a particular subject or a concept is crucial as only then the tutor can provide the help that their student needs. They also need to have a good and positive attitude to motive their students. I am very good with handling kids. I also love to learn and grow from my shortcomings or mistakes,…

Similar to my response to the last question, I believe a tutor exists to personalise the teaching experience. What this means is understanding exactly what it is the student that gets the student stuck on a certain topic. It may be the whole topic in general or it may be that one small concept is throwing them off, but the most important thing a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them passionate about the subject. I wholeheartedly believe that a student must not cram information purely for grades, but to generate a genuine interest for the subject with the assistance of the tutor. I am very familiar with working with children from a large variety of ages. I…

One of the most important things that is especially applicable in mathematics, is to be able to explain the roots of a concept and why it is used. For a broader attribute, being able to effectively communicate ideas to the student and taking the time to ensure that they fully understand the concepts. Patience, I believe I have the ability to take…

I have found that reliability is something students and parents alike, really appreciate in a tutor. In regards to the student, we are there to help them learn, and regarding parents, a tutors presence is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be there for them and listen. It is important for students to know that mistakes are supposed to be made, and as tutors we are here to guide them through their mistakes. Furthermore, our role as tutors is to help children do the work, not do the work for them. Sometimes all students need is…

Firstly, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to what the student believes they need to work on and aid them with that. The student needs are the highest priority and it is important they feel heard and listened to. Additionally, I believe that it’s important that we as tutors take the time to acquire extra…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage the student in their studies. And I think the best way to encourage a student to enjoy learning, and to excel, is to make learning and performing well, fun. And to do that, I believe it's intrinsically finding learning fun yourself, whilst being a strong role model for the…

My maths teacher always said that giving students 'a spark in their chest to learn' was the most valuable thing that a teacher could give to students. I absolutely agree. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. I believe patience, resilience, and the ability to think fast to generate alternate ways to regain the student's focus, particularly if they are on the younger side. Aside from paying attention to the student's attention span, more importantly, a tutor should be prepared on going about different routes to ensure understanding of course content and…

Inside Holland Park WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emma worked through ratios, angles, and percentages in detail, including an extended session to address extra questions via FaceTime.

Year 8 student Max focused on algebraic equations and substituting values, practising with worked examples.

For Year 7, Ava revised index laws and prime factor form using step-by-step breakdowns to build confidence with challenging exam-style problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant in the next session, "we had to repeat last week's content" on long division and cross multiplication instead of progressing.

In Year 11, one student left practice exam questions unfinished before a test; as a result, their ability to recall percentage rules under pressure dropped sharply.

A Year 4 child often avoided writing out working for multi-digit addition—leading to confusion with carrying digits and hidden mistakes that took extra time to track down.

One tutor noted, "he tends to doubt himself," so written answers were left blank or erased when uncertain.

Recent Achievements

One Holland Park West tutor noticed that a Year 8 student, Sal, initially struggled to explain maths concepts aloud but recently taught the tutor how to solve ratio and fraction problems—showing real growth in understanding and independence.

In another session, a high schooler named Isaac had always relied on memorising algebraic expressions; after working through the reasoning behind them, he started answering questions confidently without falling back on rote recall.

Meanwhile, Dao in Year 4, who once hesitated to write independently, now writes well-structured sentences with less prompting and has become impressively quick with multiplication facts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Holland Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marshall Road State School.
