I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

A tutor’s most important responsibilities are to make learning clear, personalised, and encouraging. Understanding a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style is essential. Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

To be patient while teaching new topics to students. It may be frustrating if a student cannot grasp the topic well directly, but the tutor should constantly remember that the students learn at very different speeds and that is okay. A tutor should cater to the students' needs, for example, ask the students on the topics they feel the least…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to perhaps approach the situation from the student’s perspective and try to understand the thought process of the student and where they’re coming from. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to impose upon them the enjoyment of the process of learning. Maximize their potential for learning and increase their awareness of their own strengths by creating a conducive learning environment (i.e. strength-based approach, encouragement, inquiry-based learning, one-on-one teaching and learning). Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
