In my view the most important contribution of a tutor is helping her student do well academically as well as in personal and professional life. It is not just about the concepts but also their practical implications and applications. In my view I have always been a good teacher to my students. Lucky enough to make a difference in their lives. My…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. Tutors should identify what sort of unique methods they should approach their students to give them the best tutoring experience! Most importantly, I hope students are able to have a good time learning and interacting with me. Being able to simplify and relate concepts in real…

A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, build a student's confidence, and make learning feel approachable rather than intimidating. A good tutor doesn't just teach content, but also encourages students, helps them believe in their abilities, and guides them through challenges patiently. Making…

By far the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they have a strong base knowledge of the subject by explaining and approaching ideas in ways that they understand and can use practically. My knowledge of the subject matter (maths and physics) is excellent and I\'ve seen and used a number of different teaching methods in my…

I believe it is important to understand student's current situation towards studying. Knowing student will be the best guide towards planning classes for them. Over course of time, I will be able to suit student's style in their studying: thus providing best resource towards their learning. Another important aspect of tutoring is being respectful…

I have found that several factors come into play to be a good tutor. The most important things I can do as tutor is to build strong, personal relationships with my students, to learn their strengths and weaknesses and personalise lessons according to their needs. Being a good listener, picking up clues that enable me to understand how a student…

To be patient while teaching new topics to students. It may be frustrating if a student cannot grasp the topic well directly, but the tutor should constantly remember that the students learn at very different speeds and that is okay. A tutor should cater to the students' needs, for example, ask the students on the topics they feel the least…

The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. A good tutor should be flexible and adapt to the student's needs. Rather than having a 'one formula suits all' attitude, a tutor should build on the student's strengths and address their weaknesses. They should help students overcome their fear and anxiety towards the topics. A tutor must help a student develop an aptitude for the subject. As a…

Being a good tutor requires you to be a good listener. Without listening to problems that students may experience, the time spent for both the student and the tutor will be wasted. Inside HuntingdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Dylan worked on factorisation and tackled index laws within Year 9 algebra, using "talking aloud" strategies to clarify his thinking.

Another Year 9 student revised solving linear equations and explored the difference between rational, terminating, recurring, and irrational numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alice practiced converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and calculated percentage change and error in everyday contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Algebra, skipping written steps led to frequent calculation errors—one tutor noted, "lots of middleman equations left out, which arises silly mistakes in the workings."

In senior factorisation work, missed steps undermined confidence and made it harder to spot where errors crept in.

A Year 11 student's effort with an algebra worksheet was positive, but incomplete homework limited progress between sessions.

In upper primary maths, a reluctance to write working or lay out calculations clearly made fraction and decimal problems tougher than necessary; messy setout forced extra time fixing alignment rather than understanding new methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Huntingdale noticed one high school student began tackling harder test questions independently, using graphs to work through the tough ones—something she'd hesitated with before.

Another older student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now takes time to set out every step clearly and double-checks answers for accuracy, showing real care in her process.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student made a breakthrough by finally understanding fractions after struggling for weeks; she was able to solve nearly all of the fraction questions correctly during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Huntingdale Primary School.
