The most important role that a tutor can play in the betterment of students is to help them build self-efficacy as the "can-do" attitude solves multiple problems. The self believe helps the student gain confidence which will eventually play a role in their academic learning. The motivation of being successful in gaining mathematical skills often…

The most important thing is identifying strengths, weaknesses and comfort zone of the student. The teacher in the comfort zone of student should help student work on his weaknesses and help the student identify his own strengths/passion and help him pursue it. This can also be summarized in a saying by a famous poet khalil Gibran on…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. I was a great Maths student in high school but struggled a bit in college. This taught me the value of simplifying concepts to the most basic elements for easier…

The teachers beyond simply imparting information to their students, I believe the main purpose of tutoring is to helping students help and motivate themselves. The other important thing is to guide them to the point where the students can become independent learners. communication and social skills. patience, responsibility, tolerance. ability…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow an understanding of analysis in their mind on how to approach and answer the relevant question. Students have to learn the material themselves, however a guidance is required to what is relevant material to read and where is the focus on the study. I feel that I can understand when a…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them into studying. This is done by helping them understand the knowledge and get used to solving problems that they feel confident rather than daunting towards the subject. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. All students are different, and they have different needs. Providing the right support is crucial in my opinion. Understanding where exactly the student needs help, and…

I believe a good tutor is making the student understand what they are learning but not how to get good result in their exam. Base of my past experience in attending tuition, my tutors tend to explain mathematics theorem in detail so we could understand them better and not only just to memorise when to use the formula. Also I believe practice makes…

As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. Help students build a structured approach to problem-solving. A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Furthermore, I believe that the most important thing a tutor should have…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student can vary, depending on the student. For e.g I had a friend who's outlook on maths was very negative, he had despised it his whole life and every time we'd have maths h would just have a frown upon his face and his mood would change. I assumed this was because he had never really…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to truly understand the student and make them feel supported and comfortable. Tailoring the teaching approach to suit the individual needs of each student is key, as I…

Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
