The most important things that a tutor can do for a student that always actively listen to a student and understand lives they live. I do believe that my strengths as a tutor are building strong, personal relationships with students and having specific content expertise. As roughly 2 years providing one-on-one sessions, to what I have learned…

Many modern teachers believe the way to teach is to go through the content directly and straightforwardly. However, inspired by Eddie Woo, I strive to deconstruct complex concepts into simple and relatable ideas, to not only pique students' interests but also to invite them to ask further questions to consolidate their understanding. I understand…

Patience and kindness. There is no learning without failure, and as an educator, the best thing you can do is to give your students an emotionally safe environment to fail in. I think that students generally need a lot of support, and that a tutor should be able to provide an avenue through which a student is able to feel comfortable, supported and encouraged. I think that I’m good at connecting with students and building a relationship. I am a very enthusiastic person and I believe that lends itself to creating an…

Be good learner first and then we can be a good tutor. We should find out what students want, how can they learn easily and how can they understand the solutions. I think I can manage my classroom very well. Can teach them in a easier and conveniently by using different teaching methods in a friendly and calm…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for the student is to, engage with them to make the lessons fun yet still learning valuable content along the way. In this way, the student will look forward to the meetings every week instead of dreading them as some students do. My strengths as a tutor is that i have had 4 years of experience, in…

Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. I would love to help students find genuine interest in Maths and Chemistry as much as I did. I try experimenting with…

To be a good tutor, I feel like you need to be personally connected with your students. Each student has their own unique situation whether it be family or academic and as a tutor, you must be able to work with what your students have. After all, I believe that is the role of a tutor; to help students build upon what they have and then help them…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a friend. By doing this, it gives them someone they can relate and trust, which can help support them emotionally leading to a clearer mind and better learning outcomes. Being a friend also helps create a comfortable environment where students feel safe to ask questions,…

The most important thing a student can do for a student is help them fully understand why a concept work rather than how to do it. If a student practices answering 100 mathematical problems without knowing how to properly solve them, sure they'll be able to solve those 100 problems but if something else is thrown their way they will have no idea…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to practice empathy in order to ensure the student knows they're in a safe environment where they are allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. Inside Hurstville GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Clancy focused on dividing and multiplying fractions, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 9, Jack worked on geometry by proving triangles are congruent using logical reasoning, as well as practising solving for the unknown in algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan concentrated on mastering all operations with fractions—including the reciprocal rule—and strengthened skills with real-world fraction problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, a student was regularly reminded to practice the 6, 7, 8, and 9 times tables but left these incomplete at home. This meant that time in sessions was spent reviewing old ground rather than building new skills.

For a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC, "concentration is probably the greatest challenge"—with focus lapsing during longer tasks like probability questions, which led to unfinished problems.

In Year 11 algebra revision, one student hesitated to write out working due to perfectionism; as noted: "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Recent Achievements

One Hurstville Grove tutor recently noticed a shift with Lachlan, a high school student who used to hesitate during maths sessions—he's now confidently verbalising his answers and asking for extra practice, especially with fractions and the reciprocal rule.

In chemistry, Rogan managed to connect key concepts by himself for the first time, particularly understanding why valency matters in reactions—a topic he'd previously struggled to piece together.

Meanwhile, Arianna (Year 7) has started persisting through mixed problem sets instead of skipping tricky questions, showing more determination and completing her set without giving up partway through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
