I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have the ability to cater to their needs and build self esteem, especially when one method of learning isn’t working. This not only allows for the student to understand concepts in other ways but also ensures and improves self esteem as often, students may fall behind from a…

The most important things for a tutor to do for a student is to be patient, to be a support network for their learning, and to be open to criticism if the teaching style is not what the student wants. Of course, a tutor needs to be good at explaining the material but it is also important to use one’s own experience to give advise especially in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is modify lessons to suit the needs of the student and provide resources to ensure the student can succeed; whether that is getting ahead of class schedule or just answering questions that the student is struggling with. Hopefully building confidence and skill along the way. I am observantly…

Be patient with them. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be fully committed to them while fully giving the student their attention while teaching. Furthermore, I believe that a tutor has to prepare themselves very well before a lesson and bring multiple techniques with them in order to make sure that the student can fully grasp an…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, but should guide the student to reaching that solution and ensure that they are able to understand the necessary steps. They should also be able to change the way they teach according to the needs of their students, as not everyone learns the same way. A tutor should be…

Build their confidence and prepare them before an exam. This personally was the most important thing for me prior to every exam as I would always enter panicked and feeling nauseous. A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. When you toss your fishing line into the water, you may have to wait hours to catch your first fish. When caring for a plant, you must water it frequently for several…

Flexible as this means being willing to adjust techniques and approaches to meet the learning styles of the students 3. Be patient as learn not to show annoyance in your speech or body language 4. Be good listener as learn to pick up clues in your…

A tutor should ensure the student has grasped a conceptual understanding of a topic, not a superficial one. It's highly important that they encourage students to continue asking questions for clarification on grey areas, instead of leaving it ambiguous. I'm very friendly and approachable to children, so I believe my strength lies in being able to…

A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

Inside Hurstville GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Clancy focused on dividing and multiplying fractions, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 9, Jack worked on geometry by proving triangles are congruent using logical reasoning, as well as practising solving for the unknown in algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan concentrated on mastering all operations with fractions—including the reciprocal rule—and strengthened skills with real-world fraction problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, a student was regularly reminded to practice the 6, 7, 8, and 9 times tables but left these incomplete at home. This meant that time in sessions was spent reviewing old ground rather than building new skills.

For a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC, "concentration is probably the greatest challenge"—with focus lapsing during longer tasks like probability questions, which led to unfinished problems.

In Year 11 algebra revision, one student hesitated to write out working due to perfectionism; as noted: "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Recent Achievements

One Hurstville Grove tutor recently noticed a shift with Lachlan, a high school student who used to hesitate during maths sessions—he's now confidently verbalising his answers and asking for extra practice, especially with fractions and the reciprocal rule.

In chemistry, Rogan managed to connect key concepts by himself for the first time, particularly understanding why valency matters in reactions—a topic he'd previously struggled to piece together.

Meanwhile, Arianna (Year 7) has started persisting through mixed problem sets instead of skipping tricky questions, showing more determination and completing her set without giving up partway through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
