I think the important thing for a maths tutor to realize is that the tutor is there for the student and to make them understand the concepts and help them in their learning. The tutor must not focus on finishing the session and expect students to grasp everything. Getting feedback from the students about their learning is very important. I have…

The greatest a maths tutor can do to help a student is, instead of explaining the method or process of every single question. the tutor needs to make sure that he gave a brief introduction on why he is studying that topic and explain the topic conceptually. My biggest strength is patience while tutoring to other people, especially the children.…

I think the purpose of a maths tutor is to complement and supplement the school classroom learning to ensure that the student has a good understanding of the subject's content, but ultimately a good tutor will develop a student's independent learning ability, and only fill in gaps in a student's knowledge when required. A tutor should guide a…

I feel it is important to recognise what the student is looking to get out of the tutoring experience. Tutors play a different role than teachers and parents, which puts them in a unique position to help students. Personal relationships are fundamental to student success; the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor instils trust and respect, both of which are necessary ingredients for students to learn effectively.…

Inside IndooroopillyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adrita worked through understanding algebraic rules, including substitution and expanding brackets, as well as tackling area and volume problems.

In Year 10, Sebastian focused on trigonometric functions by exploring the unit circle and its relationship to graphing these functions, plus practiced solving simultaneous equations using elimination and algebraic methods.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max reviewed exponential and logarithmic functions in-depth, applying them to real-world contexts such as half-life and the Richter scale.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, Max struggled to keep up with homework and often relied on set processes without understanding the logic behind methods—"using an equation straight away without understanding where it came from is a major factor for errors." This led to difficulty recalling strategies during tests.

For a Year 11 student, messy note-taking in algebra caused simple mistakes to be glossed over, especially when multiple equations were involved.

In Year 7, Adrita's tendency to rush through "easy" questions resulted in overlooked details and careless errors.

Motivation dips after setbacks also surfaced, with one student viewing maths as a "chore," dampening engagement during lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Indooroopilly noticed Sebastian, a Year 11 student, has started spotting his own calculation errors during textbook work—something he hadn't done before, which is vital for exam success.

Max, now in Year 8, used to hesitate when unsure but has begun actively asking questions about unfamiliar problems instead of guessing or skipping them.

In Year 7, Adrita showed real independence by quickly tackling more complex algebraic equations after mastering the basics early on; she even identified key problem words herself and solved new question types without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Kevin and Hugo appear to be going very well. Kevin communicates well with Hugo, and we have a good idea of his progress. Hugo seems to enjoy his lessons and be motivated, which is very positive.

Just thought I would let you know Wayne passed his HSC with flying colours and is off to university! THANK YOU! Your tutors did a FANTASTIC job! =)

Working with Ezy Math Tutoring is hands down, the best opportunity I could have done for my career and for myself. I started working with them while studying at university, and I found that tutoring was not only fulfilling and rewarding, but it helped me understand little things better, which in turn helped me with my work at uni. Having to teach material that I'd become so familiar with, to someone who wasn't, made me actually think about maths in much more depth. It also taught me patience, to problem solve, and how to explain a concept that I understand very well, to someone who didn't. Not to mention it was fantastic to get to know the kids, see them through school and celebrate their successes with them. After university, when interviewing for jobs to start my career, amid all my awards and achievements, the thing that impressed people the most was my tutoring experience. The most amazing thing is being able to see the difference in the students - not only in their marks but their confidence. It's incredible to know that you helped make that happen. Unfortunately I am unable to continue tutoring with Ezy Math Tutoring as I've started my career as a Software Test Analyst, and it's because of my tutoring experience that I was able to receive this amazing opportunity. Ezy Math Tutoring really has been the best experience, and I would definitely recommend working as a Tutor with them, or as a client.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Indooroopilly Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Family Primary School.
