Aside from providing knowledgable academic skills that could be beneficial for a student's education, I believe that another important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and welcoming environment for students to encourage effective learning. I know first-hand that tutoring, especially with someone you may not know very well can be daunting,…

Clarifying even the trivial of the doubts that the student possess maybe the biggest responsibility of the tutor. The tutor must assess a method to deliver the content to them. Patience and evaluating a discrete method for each of the individuals are the two most important characteristics a tutor must flaunt. The tutor must be able to teach in a…

It is important for a tutor to be a good listener and finding the best route to achieve the best result. Based on individuals, we need to understand their real struggle and making plan accordingly. I tutor can do so much more than just help with studies and exams. A teacher is a person who is able to inspire his students. I believe that a teacher must be able to develop an interest in the heart of the student. So as a teacher our main motive should always be able to make the student motivated for studies. As I am a kind of people person who…

Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

I think its understanding, confidence in knowledge and patience. We as tutors have to realise that not all students will understand ever single concept that they are taught the first time they are taught it. Therefore being understanding of everyone's situations, capabilities and then being able to find a unique way of teaching a student that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. I believe that tutoring sessions should be based on the student's needs in a specific subject area, and the only way to understand these needs is to have an honest, open conversation with them. I strongly believe that tutor should never give up on any students and respect student's own learning style. Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
