Apart from achieving the basics of helping a student in school work to ensure they catch up with their school's curriculum, it is important that a tutor assists their students in forming healthy studying habits and equipped their students with effective study skills that will benefit students' studies in the long run. More importantly for…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to accommodate to their learning style. The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

I believe that there are two crucial things that tutors can and should do for students. Firstly, each tutor should present the rationale and the logic while explaining new concepts to students rather than make them memorize and automatically follow the rules or steps. Students should understand what they do and that is the responsibility of…

The ability to understand a student and their learning style is something I highly value in a tutor. In school classes where they are often one of many, they may find that the teaching style may not work for them and that they cannot achieve their goals. In a tutoring scenario, we are able to cater to them more specifically, to be intuitive about…

For a tutor, they have to pay as much effort as they can to help student to solve their questions and let them to understand the question well, they can not give up in the process. Also, they have to prepare well before the tutorial so that students will not waste their time. I have been a…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student develop an interest in learning. Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

Forging a want to learn. Learning to read and write shouldn't be a chore; it's what makes people human. Local Reviews

Grace is very happy to be working with Anthony and her feedback has been positive.
Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
