Obviously, the most important thing I can do is teach students the material they are trying to learn, with *clear communication*. Believe in every student. Not every student will ace every test, but so long as I can support them in being *their* best, I'll be helping them reach their potential. Building rapport with each student is also…

Be prepared for a lesson, be interested, explain things properly and clearly, make sure they actually understand and aren't just saying 'yes', allowing them to work through some tasks themselves. I think I am good at explaining and communicating. I am also quite down to earth, so I think that it is easy to ask me any questions.…

An ability to communicate a genuine passion for the subject. Patience and being calm in the delivery of the content. I think reassurance that there is often a feeling of uncertainty through the learning process and that this is perfectly ok and a sign that learning is happening. Being structured in the delivery of the content so that there can…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a maths tutor approachable. A tutor should never make their students feel that any question is dumb. Imparting the idea that all questions are good questions and students should never fear while asking anything is one…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

Listening. I think the best thing a maths tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my…

One of the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to get to know them well, so they can understand where the student is at in terms of their learning, and what way they learn best. This can allow me as a tutor to effectively use my skills and knowledge in the best way to help each individual student get the most out of their…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a maths tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic…

Establish their confidence to solve the questions independently. That doesn't mean you don't help when they are stuck. I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

A tutor can do many things, but the most important one is give their students the confidence to apply what they have learned to the best of their ability. You can guide a student through a dozen practice questions, but ultimately, it is more important that they see the work as approachable and not impossible to do by themselves. As a tutor I am…

As a maths tutor, I encourage my students to truly understand the course material, rather than aimlessly memorize the content. To do this it is important to be supportive, but firm. This question need to be discussed into two solutions. First, for the lower grade student, it is essential for them to build up their interest towards maths, which will help them to be better off in the future. On the other hand, for the student who are preparing for their VCE, the tutor should focus more how to improve their grade in order to get…

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
