Believing in students is one of the crucial aspects for being a tutor. The student needs someone to believe in them to succeed in their subjects, even if they themselves do not do so. Patience and firmness go hand in hand, so that the tutor is able to ensure the students cultivates discipline when learning, but also that they enjoy the process. As…

Sometimes its difficult to read what is going inside a students head and maybe student says he/she understands the subject but in reality they are just shy to ask questions As a tutor I can have some informal tests to see whether the student is understanding. A good tutor should always focus on qualitative approach rather than quantitative…

A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. It's important to help them build the confidence and general skills to study on their own and succeed. I'm good at clarifying points of misunderstanding and then working from there. I'm easy to get along with,…

A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. The most important thing is the tutor will be a friend to the student without actually being a friend. The magic lies here. The mentality that I never give up. I was not a very gifted student so I had to work hard to understand…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. I tutor can do so much more than just help with studies and exams. A teacher is a person who is able to inspire his students. I believe that a teacher must be able to develop an interest in the heart of the student. So as a teacher our main motive should always be able to make the student motivated for studies. I believe the most important thing is to allow the student to share the same passion and interest for the subject, since that is the biggest factor for inciting motivation within the student to keep going. I think there are two main things a tutor can do for a student; maintain high grades and garner a positive attitude. It is imperative as a tutor's job to help the student maintain or achieve high grades in the particular area of study. However, high academic standards are not simply enough. It is also important for a tutor to build up an…

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
