Be encouraging - Student's won't understand something straight away and this can be a source of discouragement for them. The last thing they need is a tutor who refuses to acknowledge this. Constantly encouraing the student will help them realise it will only be a matter of time until they nail a concept. Be a friend - The idea of a tutor is to…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to help them improve as much as they can in a given subject. I feel confident in a leadership and teaching role due to my previous experience leading primary and high school aged kids at my church. I am also patient and very eager to help improve the skills of any students in their…

A tutor needs to be a good role model both as a peer and a teacher. I believe the three most important things I could do for a student is academic support, addressing study habits and confronting weaknesses. I believe focusing on these three aspects will do the upmost for the student in the short and long term. I’ve grown up and worked with people from across the socio-economic spectrum, I think I have a…

I believe that the tutor's purpose is not to make the student rely on them, but rather to give them the tools to figure things out for themselves. Tutors need to be able to communicate easily and coherently, in order to ensure that the student can understand. I believe I am patient and willing to work at something until the other person…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to what they need and make sure to push them only to their highest point of productivity. I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and remember that everyone learns at their own pace, in their own way. Tutors can provide practice papers, positive feedback, ways of improving to the student. The aim is to not make the student feel as if they are unable to achieve the goal, but to allow them to…

Inside JannaliTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mia worked on adding and subtracting fractions with both common and uncommon denominators, as well as multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers using practical examples.

In Year 8, Jack focused on algebra by expanding brackets and factorising expressions into brackets, along with practice applying index laws to simplify terms.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily tackled financial maths topics like calculating simple and compound interest, plus worked through algebraic problems involving negative indices and expanding brackets for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, one student hesitated to read financial maths questions aloud and often skipped writing out working, which led to uncertainty when problems required several steps—she generally knows what she is meant to do however, struggles when adding multiple steps together.

In Year 8 algebra sessions, skipping the written process meant sign errors crept in, especially during equation rearrangement.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student sometimes avoided tricky worded problems unless completely sure of the answer, missing valuable practice.

After setbacks with long division in Year 4, frustration surfaced and confidence dropped; this left her reluctant to attempt unfamiliar methods on her own.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Jannali noticed Sophie, a Year 10 student, has shifted from hesitating over algebra to confidently expanding brackets and tackling both simple and compound interest problems independently.

Meanwhile, Abbey in Year 9 used to struggle with index laws but now applies them successfully when working through written questions on her own.

For a younger student, Charlotte in Year 4 has moved beyond basic arithmetic—she's started breaking down complex word problems by identifying key information first instead of diving straight into calculations. In her last session, she solved all perimeter tasks without any prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miranda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Jannali High School.
