To me, a maths tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other…

It is important for a maths tutor to develop a close relationship with a student so that the student is comfortable around you, and also to set high expectations for your student to maximise learning potential. It is also imperative to always plan my lesson with a hands on approach to involve my student, such as giving my student problems to do…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is to encourage and motivate the student when the student does not feel like they are able to themselves. I also believe it is important that a tutor is patient when working with a student and understands that not every student learns the same way, so it is the tutor's responsibility to…

- Being patient is one of the most important things a maths tutor can do, along with willing to repeat themselves as long as it takes for the student to grasp the concept. Another important thing is to be creative and have multiple ways of teaching, which also strengthens the student's understanding. As a tutor, I hold multiple skills and…

In school, they teach students based on a certain method that suits a cohort or class of students, which caused some students to lag behind. Build confidence, encourage participation and motivation, be supportive and promote independence. A combination of all these factors will achieve results, which is ultimately the goal. In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. I think it is most important to be patient with the students and to ensure they properly understand the concepts being taught before moving onto the next topic. The communication and organisation has been very satisfactory. We have been impressed with our tutor so far and have recommended the service to friends for their children.
Katie, Keilor East

Inside Keilor EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Lara worked on matrix multiplication and interpreting transition and steady state matrices, using examples to connect algebraic representation with practical applications.

In Year 11, Marcus revised index laws—solving for x when indices are fractions or negatives—and simplified surd expressions, as well as tackling linear equations involving expanding brackets.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Karl practiced reading analogue and digital time, then applied multiplication tables to worded problems and explored basic division with remainders.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student tackling matrix operations tended to skip writing out intermediate steps, as noted: "Needs to practice writing down steps instead of jumping to the solution so it is easier to tackle more complex problems." This habit led to errors being missed in longer calculations.

In Year 9 algebra, another student struggled when copying decimals from the calculator onto paper, sometimes misplacing digits and causing follow-on mistakes.

For a Year 5 learner, avoiding pen-and-paper working in worded problems meant basic addition was often incorrect, leaving them frustrated when checking answers later.

Missed homework across several year levels further limited chances for skill reinforcement between sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Keilor East noticed a real turning point for one high school student who, after struggling with linear equations, now independently lays out each step and accurately solves for x—something she'd often skipped before.

Another older student has started double-checking large calculations for satellite questions on his own rather than waiting to be prompted, showing new initiative and accuracy.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously hesitated to write down working is now confidently translating worded problems into equations and jotting down each step as he solves them.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Ryan has been great. Jordon is already understanding more of the content which is fantastic. His words were "Ryan explains things much better than my teacher, so I understand it better."

All is going well with David. He is always on time and explaining things well with Ella. They are working through her math book and things are moving forward which is great. She will continue with a tutor once she starts school in Malaysia.

Thank you for your email. Ben and David are working well together and it appears that the working relationship is positive. Interestingly, Ben has instantly been able to move to working with David as both David and Ben have in common the same secondary school that Ben is currently going to. So while David attended the school some years prior to Ben, and much has change, they were still able to compare experiences about the school which helped start them working constructively. We are very satisfied with continuing with David.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Keilor Heights Primary School.
