I believe the most important things a tutor can do are provide clarity, build confidence, and adapt to each student’s learning style. Patience and communication also help students grasp tough concepts more effectively. I focus on breaking down complex topics into simple steps and offering practice to help them improve. For example, one of my…

To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. Empathy and communication skills. Having been working since I was 16, my mindset has changed ever since.…

It is to empower students to believe in themselves - whatever we do in life, it is 80% psychology and 20% skills. They will learn to experiment to find out a routine that works best for them : learning new concepts + revising + deliberate practising. I am highly organised, enthusiastic and personable. I will walk through with the student the…

I have found several consistent factors that continuously make for successful tutors, who routinely improve student academic performance and increase students' self-efficacy and one of them is that successful tutors build strong, personal relationships with their students. I have experienced firsthand the difference a tutor can make on a child's enthusiasm and engagement with a subject, and I want to pass that onto the next generation of kids. This passion, I think, is the most important thing a tutor or any teacher can give to their student, because it opens their eyes to the complexity and beauty of the subject-…

I believe that a tutor needs to be able to explain a certain topic in different ways as one approach is not a fit for all. Alongside this, communicating and being emotionally intelligent allows to truly understand your student and how they deal with acedemic pressure etc. Ultimately, patience is the key when it comes to tutoring as students may…

I think a tutor plays a significant role in making learning enjoyable. By making learning approachable, students can develop the enthusiasm to learn new things and allow for growth in their studies. Ensuring that students aren't afraid to ask for help. It's vital that tutors reinforce the fact that we are there to help them and won't care at all if they make mistakes and that it's a necessary part of the learning process. This not only helps build a sense of rapport with the student, but it promotes efficient and effective learning. I think…

Inside Keilor NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Evangeline focused on angles—naming, drawing, and identifying parallel and transverse lines—before starting foundational algebra skills.

In Year 10, Leah worked through financial mathematics by exploring compound interest and reducing balance loans using a financial calculator.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel concentrated on graphs and networks, covering topics like shortest paths and network diagrams with worked examples from his textbook.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student arrived unprepared—without textbook, pen, or paper—and showed low motivation despite confidently giving incorrect answers. "He was sure of his work but had left everything at school," noted the tutor.

For a Year 10 student, untidy and incomplete notes slowed revision and led to last-minute cramming before assessments; an exercise book was even lent as a model for improvement.

In Year 7 maths, not bringing materials home meant lesson time was lost improvising instead of consolidating skills.

When homework is skipped or materials forgotten, progress stalls and small misunderstandings persist into test situations.

Recent Achievements

A Keilor North tutor noticed Kristian, a high school student, has begun taking more initiative with his maths—he's now using a new exercise book to organise notes and complete exercises separately, which he hadn't done before.

In another recent session, Evangeline (Year 7) independently wrote her own summary sheet ahead of a test, marking a shift from passive listening to actively preparing for assessments.

Meanwhile, Abbey in Year 4 showed clear improvement: after struggling with multiplication last week, she tackled similar problems this time with greater confidence and started working on division without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Catholic Regional College North Keilor.
