The most important thing for a tutor to do is understand exactly what that particular student does and does not understand. Many times I remember going to professors consultation hours in there office and asking them a question to which they gave me a long explanation which didn't even address my question leaving me more confused than before. A…

I think the most important thing I can do for my students is to help them achieve their goals or improve their grades by understanding what they understand from the content. Most of the time when Im tutoring, I allow my students to engage with the subject and try to explain what they're doing and giving them more confidence to try, make errors and…

Besides teaching concepts and helping students solve problems, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate students. As I believe, unlike school teachers, tutors can give students individualised attention. They have more time with their students to talk about what challenges they are facing about subjects or reflect on where…

Able to preview content for school as well as revising content for examinations. I feel the most important things a tutor can provide is aid and knowledge in relatively new topics. As someone who has received tutoring before I know the difference a good tutor can make to help bridge the gap between your current self and where you want to be. I will be able to go over what questions they have got incorrectly before and specifically target the students weaknesses to make them overall stronger. Additionally I can specifically…

My greatest asset as a tutor would be my ability to really zone in on any problems a student may have in particular. This comes from being able to put yourself in their position before answering their questions and trying to be as tailored to every students learning ability. Also to be highly motivated to impact the greater good which will be…

I think it is important to offer a new perspective and respect for the subject they are learning. They might have had a distaste for the subject simply because they find it difficult or lack confidence, but hopefully, through my tutoring, they can come to enjoy learning and expanding their knowledge. I give clear and concise explanations and have…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is connect with them. This results in the tutoring process becoming a much more comfortable experience, which allows for the student to learn and improve their academic abilities in an environment they enjoy. What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

For me, the most important thing to do as a tutor is not only help teach class content, but share study skills, time management, note taking tips, and other ways to manage the Year 12 workload. Year 12 is not purely about knowledge, but handling pressure and staying on top of work, and I hope to communicate my experience in this. Throughout my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allow the student to see that they are so much more than their grades, but also giving them the tools they need to succeed academically, because at the end of the day, their grades will play a big part in the options they will have for future studies. I feel my biggest strength would be my…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to teach a step by step method and mindset which can be applied to all problems, varying across subjects as well as life. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, tailor lessons to their unique needs, and create a supportive, encouraging environment. Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. I believe I am good at breaking down harder concepts into individual relatable, easy to understand components to teach separately, then…

All the students in a class do not have the same level of understanding, so the teacher needs to be very patient to make sure that all her students are carried along. That no student is made to feel less than others despite his/her performance. A teacher should constantly encourage her student to be better. A teacher should continually liven the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him confident in the subject he is struggling with. A teacher’s role is not solely to raise a student’s grades, but rather to help the…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median and mode calculations as well as interpreting graphs.

In Year 10, Ethan practised non-right angled trigonometry using the sine rule and cosine rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam focused on basic trigonometry and explored normal distribution, including understanding its key properties and uses.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often worked out maths in their head instead of writing steps, which made it harder to spot where misunderstandings with algebra or negative signs occurred—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11 Physics, a student froze when unsure how to start a question and needed guidance breaking down what was being asked; missing definitions slowed progress.

A senior Chemistry student relied heavily on checking notes for formulas rather than recalling them independently, leading to lost time during problem-solving.

Nerves in impromptu speeches (Year 10 English) led to rushed delivery and forgotten structure.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noted a high school student who previously hesitated to speak up now talks through his problem-solving process out loud and actively asks questions when stuck, rather than staying quiet.

Another secondary student showed new independence by checking over each maths problem and explaining their reasoning step-by-step—something he'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner, after struggling with fractions last term, has started converting mixed numbers independently and can now solve most ratio problems solo.

Last week, one completed all ten practice questions without needing any hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
