There a many key things that I believe a tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. One of them I believe is for the tutor to be willing to share their knowledge in any area that the student is struggling with or wants some guidance in. I believe this is crucial as it is one of the main advantages of having a tutor in that they…

As mentioned, it is important to be genuinely passionate and interested in what you teach, because that mentality will transfer to the student. It is important to make the content engaging, like through providing real world examples. It is also important that they actually understand what you're teaching and are not afraid to ask questions…

Being a constant source of confidence for the student is one of the most important aspects of a tutor. Providing the students the reassurance that they can excel is absolutely vital for when they undertake their studies in school. A tutor can first start by welcoming their student and getting to know them in order to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. This will make it easier for the tutor to better understand the student, but also easier for the student to freely ask questions. As well as holding the ability to teach, a tutor must have patience. Being a good…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure the students are able to appreciate the studies they are undertaking. I feel the most important factor in learning is one's own motivation, and from personal experiences, this is linked with how much the subject is appreciated and enjoyed. Thus I recall how many students feel a…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. I think a tutor must help a student understand their work. A deep level understanding is good as it can give new perspectives to their work and to their endeavors. A surface level understanding is okay for replicating pre-set answers for a question, but a deeper understanding allows the person to view the question in a different way and to give…

Inside KnoxfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Paige worked on building speed and accuracy with double-digit addition and subtraction, as well as practising mental maths strategies for complementary numbers to ten.

Year 11 student Lily focused on balancing thermochemical equations in Chemistry and explored the production process and environmental impact of various fuels.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Daniel tackled problems involving definite integrals—such as estimating area under curves—and reviewed differentiation techniques using chain rule applications in preparation for VCE exams.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working ahead in VCE Maths Methods left some school assignment problems incomplete, which meant that gaps lingered and couldn't be addressed until the next session.

In senior Chemistry, one student often delayed sending lab reports to the tutor before class—"If Sarah can send me the report a day earlier, we'll save time for feedback"—resulting in less time to tackle misconceptions or extend her analysis.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student's tendency to rely on hands or number lines during subtraction led to hesitation when faced with numbers above 20; this slowed mental calculation and caused uncertainty when new combinations appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Knoxfield tutor noticed a big shift with Sarah in Year 12 Chemistry—she's now coming to sessions ready with her own questions and even prepares materials ahead of time, showing far more initiative than before.

Another high school student recently started pinpointing and correcting her own homework mistakes during lessons, something she hadn't done independently until now.

In a primary session, a younger learner who previously hesitated with vertical addition is now breezing through problems quickly and rarely makes errors.

Last week, Sarah finished her practical report without needing any extra support from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rowville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrington Primary School.
