IN MY VIEW, JUST AS IT IS NECESSARY FOR THE DOCTOR FIRST TO DIAGNOSE THE PATIENT'S ILLNESS, SO IT IS EQUALLY NECESSARY FOR THE TEACHER TO DIAGNOSE THE STUDENT'S WEAKNESS AND DIFFICULTIES, FIRST! SO HAVING CONDUCTED A NEEDS ANALYSIS, THEN THE TUTOR SHOULD OPT FOR THE MOST APPROPRIATE APPROACH TO REMOVE THE STUDENT'S WEAKNESSES AND PROBLEMATIC…

In my opinion, a tutor's prime responsibility is to make the learner comfortable and ready for learning. I strongly believe that teaching doesn't always means learning is taking place. For successful learning, a tutor has to develop love and enthusiasm for learning in his student. A tutor has to make his/ her lessons engaging for the learner to…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give them the space to make mistakes and learn on their own. Every student is different, and it is incredibly important for tutors to recognise how a student likes to learn - (visual vs written, memory, attention span, challenged vs small steps, etc.), but however that is,…

A tutor is the main source of wisdom. Textbooks and study materials give us information but a tutor is the one who guides a student in understanding the analytical logic behind the message and gives sufficient instances of its usage. I think stoking an interest in self education/exploration of a subject is more important than helping them simply pass a test (though that is important as well). When a student wants to research a topic on their own time, they not only have found a way to improve, but also might have found a future passion or career choice they never knew they…

A tutor should recognise a person's academic abilities and enable them to succeed in achieving their best correspondingly. They are also responsible for suggesting possible ways to improve the person's study methods (e.g. visual learning, songs, or writing). A good tutor will be patient as well as a good listener. Addressing the students' queries, errors with honesty yet with empathy. A good tutor should be willing to be dynamic in their teaching style, so as to engage the learners. Additionally, a tutor should be willing to share their own experiences and draw parallels with their students. I…

Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
