The most important things I can do for students are to go through the problems with them step by step, to solve their problems in learning, and to prove they have the ability to solve the problems themselves. I have a PhD qualification in Materials Engineering and I am good at mathematics, engineering, and physics subjects. I have extensive…

Provide inspiration to the student so that they can find their own interest in that subject which in turn will help the student to achieve better results. I have a talent for…

Patience is really important for students. Providing positive feedback, reassurance and encouragement, even if they don't quite understand yet. And finally being approachable and willing to explain something multiple times until they understand. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is my patience. I will happily go over concepts multiple times…

Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. According to me even though tutoring is taught in class of numerous students, it is more of a one is to one relationship rather than one is to n. Hence, Understanding students and diagnosing them accordingly, with regard to their individual…

Be supportive whilst you're teaching them, in terms of chatting to the student and making sure they're comfortable enough to tell you all parts of the problem that they're struggling with. If a tutor doesn't make the student feel comfortable and supported then they are less likely to get the most out of the tutoring. I am punctual and reliable so…

Also, setting homework and encouraging the student is the next essential part to helping a student. My strengths as a tutor are my compassionate and hardworking nature. My…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think the most important thing that tutor can do is to build confidence in student to solve any kind of problem in the exam. This can be only done when they are through with the formulas, concepts and it's applications. I think making clear understanding about the concepts is my strength as a tutor. I believe if anyone clearly knows the concepts…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is listen. There may be other things going on either at home or at school that is preventing students from reaching their academic goals and the best way to foster a student-tutor relationship is to that you're there for them and that you understand what they're going through, in order to…

A tutor can do many things, but the most important one is give their students the confidence to apply what they have learned to the best of their ability. You can guide a student through a dozen practice questions, but ultimately, it is more important that they see the work as approachable and not impossible to do by themselves. As a tutor I am…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. For me, the most important thing is to always ask questions if there are any unclear parts of the lesson. Also, mastery is always important so practice is the key, esp. for Math. Inside KooyongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophia revised direct and inverse variation, using real-life problem examples to reinforce concepts.

For Year 11, James focused on logarithms and non-linear data transformations, building confidence through step-by-step graph interpretation.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practised applying the sine and cosine rules as well as calculating the area of triangles, working through targeted exam-style questions for advanced understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often forgot to bring homework from school, which meant valuable lesson time was spent trying to recall missed questions rather than reviewing their working.

In a senior Methods session, another student relied heavily on their calculator for simple algebraic manipulation; as noted, "she jumped straight to the calculator for every step," which led to gaps in understanding and made it harder to spot errors during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student's written work in long division was sometimes messy and hard to follow—making it challenging to trace where mistakes occurred.

Recent Achievements

One Kooyong tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now requests clarification when confused instead of guessing—this shift has led to far fewer errors in her equations.

A Year 11 student, previously reliant on hints for data analysis tasks, derived a regression line solo using their calculator last session and checked their result against the class example.

In Year 4, a student who used to forget spelling lists between sessions recalled all ten new words without prompting and even volunteered to write them out at the start of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - Hawthorn Talented Player Program (TPP).
