the most important part a tutor like me can do is encouraging students to believe in their abilities and providing positive reinforcement as they progress. Also, the gist of my 2 years of tutoring would be offering tailored teaching experience where adapting teaching methods to suit the student’s learning styles and needs and working on…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. I am able to connect to the students. I am young and fun and even ride a motorcycles I play guitar and most games kids no play allowing em to…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring, especially when…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

The most important thing is being able to connect with the children and spark curiosity about the subjects in their minds. As them being excited to learn makes them more receptive to learn more complex topics with relative ease. My strengths are approaching problems with different perspectives and focusing on the logic and structure of the…

Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. The tutor should be patient and help the student understand. I am patient, easy going and quickly understand the problems that students face during their studies. 1. Personalize the learning. every student is different, so what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. 2. Be ready to help. As the job entails, the tutor must be willing to work according to the student's desire. 3. Teaching them how to learn. the ultimate goal of the tutor is teaching the students how to learn and apply. I am…

The most important thing I can do for my students is to help them become self-motivated learners. Firstly,…

As mentioned in some of the earlier answers, I think that a tutor is not only there to impart their own knowledge, but also be there for the development of any responsibility or independence characteristics as students grow. This can include but is not limited to: confidence, tenacity, perseverance and the ability to bounce back against adversity…

I value tutors as being mentors who students look up to for advice and as a role model, whilst revealing a students' true potential which in turn improves self-confidence and self-esteem. For instance, I think the evolving of students' enjoyment towards subjects, even ever so slightly, is one of the most valuable things an inspiring and supportive…

Listening to the student's misconceptions and errors, and learning from experience. By listening to the students concern, needs, wishes, questions, a tutor can truely cater uniquely to the student. The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. Studying for exams can get very stressful and students forget the joy of learning something and their natural curiosity. If a tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

I consider inspiration to be the most important thing a tutor can do. I believe this will not only contribute to the student's academic progress but also improve their confidence and enthusiasm to…

he tutoring is definitely going well. Minyu is getting a lot out of Nima's tutoring. She has now decided that she likes Maths and has been getting some good results. We are happy.
Danielle, Lane Cove

Inside Lane Cove WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and discuss areas for improvement.

In Year 9, Tom focused on probability with single events and practiced constructing and interpreting linear graphs from algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ruby tackled simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, as well as exploring investments and loans in the context of credit cards.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without her test book, which limited review of past assessments and slowed feedback on algebra exam technique; as a tutor noted, "she needed reminders to set out all working clearly and avoid redoing calculations."

In Year 7 mathematics, one student hesitated to write down solutions, preferring mental calculations even when asked for full working. This habit left logic gaps that made it harder to spot where confusion with negatives crept in.

Meanwhile, a primary student twice missed submitting writing homework, so lesson time shifted from skill-building to catching up—momentum was lost before ideas could really take shape.

Recent Achievements

A Lane Cove West tutor noticed Harry, a Year 9 student, now lays out his answers systematically in maths, where he used to jumble steps and lose marks for working errors.

Georgia, who struggled with visualising three-dimensional objects last term, recently translated elevation drawings into accurate 3D shapes during her session without prompting.

In English, a senior student who was previously hesitant to accept feedback on essays has started actively rewriting topic sentences and openly asks for suggestions when revising her discursive writing pieces.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Chatswood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mowbray Public School.
