I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is listen. Listen to their problem, why they may not understand a concept, and then help to solve the problem together. I think that having fun, is also very important. One of my main goals aside from helping a student understand the content, is to help the student enjoy the…

Through effective preparation and constant encouragement, tutors can cultivate a positive learning environment. Tutors also have the responsibility to diversify teaching methods and resources. In doing so, they can…

To ensure that the student understands everything fully. That is what a tutor is for, and no concept or idea should be left unturned. Everything should be thoroughly explored until full understanding has been achieved. I am an extremely patient person who will spend as long as required to explain a concept or idea. I also use down-to-earth…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to provide ongoing support and encouragement. It is crucial that tutors not only identify but also highlight the unique strengths of each student. This approach empowers tutors, as it allows them to build a better connection with their students and instill confidence in their abilities,…

I would consider the most important thing a tutor could do, would be to teach their student more than they knew to begin with. It's a very simple statement, but it gets to the heart of the matter I feel. All the methods a tutor uses should be geared towards helping the student learn something, and have them understand and remember what they've…

Help them to grow in their strengths and to encourage them to reach their potential in the subject. To teach them to be teachable and to teach others. I like the phrase that “each one teaches oneâ€. There are a couple of things which I think a tutor can do for their students (1) Understand their way of thinking and interact in a way which is more familiar to them. A tutor must have different ways to put across the same concept to different students. A single way may not fit everyone. (2) A tutor must be available for the students at any…

Empathise: A tutor should provide encouragement, build confidence, and create a safe space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to improve a student's confidence with the subject they are tutoring. Once a student has the confidence that they can in fact figure it out they will be far more willing to put in the hard work to improve in the subject. Inside LawsonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Angus revised quadratic equations, focusing on factorising using the sum-product and pairing methods, and reviewed his recent test for common errors.

Year 9 Zoe worked through expanding and simplifying surds as well as applying Pythagoras' theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems.

For Year 8 Liam, lessons included solving linear equations and understanding percentage-based word problems using real-life deposit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Rushing was a major obstacle for the Year 10 student, especially in trigonometry—"his biggest enemy in testing is rushing through, which leads to careless mistakes," as one tutor noted.

In algebra tasks with a Year 8 student, skipping working made it hard to spot errors and explain solutions clearly; the right answer sometimes appeared but without supporting steps.

For a Year 6 student, confidence dips after setbacks meant he hesitated on times tables and needed encouragement to double-check his work.

When these habits crept in during revision or timed practice, understanding and retention suffered noticeably.

Recent Achievements

A Lawson tutor noticed that Angus, a high school student, has started working through non-monic quadratics with more independence—he now builds his own "cheat sheet" and tries problems solo after needing frequent reminders before.

Another high schooler, Amy, initially found continuous random variables confusing but kept asking questions during the session; by the end, she solved mean and median problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Sam in primary school made a big leap with long multiplication: where he used to get stuck and need step-by-step help, this week he finished all his homework correctly on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University of Canberra High School Kaleen.
