The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put time and effort into the learning experience. In particular, for one on one tutoring, the tutor must be able to go at a pace that suits the student and adapt lesson plans according to the student. The tutor must be willing to put extra effort outside tutoring time to ensure that the…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they explicitly explain concepts to a student. This should be done in a way that makes the most intuitive sense to the student. Also, for me, it is essential that a tutor, as well as teaching students, teaches them how to study by themselves and how to teach themselves. This should be done by providing…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

Personally, I believe that tutors play the most crucial role in facilitating a nurturing and interactive learning space, catering their teachings to the student's individual requirements, and offering personalized help, guidance and feedback too. This can be done in a tutor session to allow for students to feel at ease, speak freely, and ask…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

I believe that is to impart the knowledge he/she has to the student about a certain subject, in such way and manner that is very considerate to the mental and emotional well-being and capacity of the student. It is important that the tutor knows his/her student’s capabilities, so the tutor will have a basis on how he/she will tackle the…

Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. Inside LewishamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Liam worked on addition and subtraction using number lines, as well as identifying equality statements and basic counting strategies through interactive games.

In Year 10, Emily focused on BODMAS equations and fractions from her homework before tackling introductory algebra questions involving like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Andrea revised percentage calculations without a calculator and practised the unitary method to solve real-world profit scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to show full working in algebra and coordinate geometry, leading to hidden errors; as one tutor observed, "extra attention to detail would help minimise mistakes."

In Year 9, a student often avoided writing out solutions neatly or following class formats, which made it harder to spot where steps went wrong—especially with formula rearrangement.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting homework and rarely practicing challenging questions limited progress when faced with multi-step division problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 2 student's loss of confidence after setbacks led them to guess answers rather than try new approaches.

Recent Achievements

A Lewisham tutor recently saw Annabelle, a high school student, shift from hesitating with trigonometry to confidently identifying which function—sin, cos, or tan—to use and starting to rearrange equations independently, something she found confusing before.

In another session, Liam (Year 3) began writing his maths and diagrams out neatly without prompting; he used to skip steps and rush through work.

Justin, also in high school, was initially unsure about coordinate geometry but after extra practice now works through algebraic operations more smoothly.

Annabelle finished her lesson by solving a full set of angle sum problems with minimal help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Please be advised that I would like to cease the tutoring services of your company. My boy has greatly benefited from the tutoring of Robin who has shown great patience, ability and caring. I did inform Robin last night that I was not continuing with tutoring as I feel Liam is now back on the Maths track. If I need further assistance, I'll give you a call. Thanks (especially to Robin).

Yes, Lauren is fantastic!! Jesse is actually enjoying the work and doing Lauren's set homework (and it's the holidays)! Thank you so much!

thanks for your enquiry.  Isabella is enjoying her time with Manisha and the topics they are covering are all starting to sink in.  Isabella likes they way Manisha explains things to her and feels comfortable in asking questions. Manisha seems like a very capable person and I like her professional manner in all things.  At end of each lesson, she runs through with me what has been covered and leaves Isabella with some tips and exercises to go over during the week. I am pleased with how things are progressing and will continue until Isabella feels like she is at a place where she no longer requires assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham.
