The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to simplify complex concepts, adapt their teaching to suit the students learning style, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. A good tutor builds confidence, encourages critical thinking, and inspires students to tackle challenges independently…

As a tutor, here are the most important actions we can provide our students; encouragement, support, and consistency First and foremost I am patient. Having the ability to be understanding and change tactics when a student needs a different perspective on a problem requires patience and strong understanding of…

I have always felt the most important thing to do for them is to - rid them of the fear of that subject and making them self sufficient. I study pure mathematics in university , because I see a certain kind of beauty in natural sciences , therefore tend to bring my student to appreciate the language of the universe in a light they probably…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. That is why I feel it is so important to build an easy rapport with students in the beginning, making the student feel at ease, and comfortable, putting the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

There are many facets of tutoring essential to achieve the optimum yet I think the most important element is the one on one quality of tutoring. This enables a student to be provided with specific feedback and assistance of their areas for improvement or difficulties. Understanding the strengths an weaknesses of a student is the most important…

Mental support Always be active to answer questions (even in off work periods of the day) Make a good plan of what the session will be all about before it starts. Openmind at work ... A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. Every tutor should try to personalise the tutor session based on the needs, learning pattern and pace, interests and goals of the children so that they can make the most out of it. I…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student include: 1. Foster Understanding: A tutor’s primary role is to help the student grasp the subject matter. Inside LilyfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Talia practised using Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths and worked on rearranging equations in geometry problems.

In Year 9, Keira focused on solving challenging trigonometry questions and reviewed her recent test on probability, also revisiting how to simplify and expand algebraic expressions.

Greta, in Year 11, concentrated on differentiation—covering the product, chain, and quotient rules—and extended this by finding derivatives of inverse functions during calculus practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to bring their maths homework, so written work was scattered and difficult to track—"work is in one place only if homework comes every lesson."

In Year 10, a student tended to skip writing out working for easier algebra questions; as noted, "she lost marks by just writing the answer or partial steps, especially in assessments."

Meanwhile, a senior biology student left assignments until the last minute. This led to rushed note-taking and incomplete reports. The pressure of unfinished tasks lingered into class discussions, making it harder to consolidate concepts and scientific terminology under time constraints.

Recent Achievements

One Lilyfield tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid showing her working now confidently writes out every step and explains her reasoning as she solves trig and algebra problems.

Another high school student, after struggling with quadratic equations, managed to solve for intercepts independently across all question types—a clear turnaround from earlier sessions where she needed significant prompting.

At the primary level, a Year 4 student surprised both himself and his tutor by not only understanding fractions on his first day learning them at school but also improving his timetables since last lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Inner Sydney Montessori School, Lilyfield.
