Finding ways to help them in understanding key concepts e.g. using simpler language to explain in my best possible way. Proofing reading my student's work is also important especially math questions as one mistake could lead to a subsequent one, i would teach student ways to proof read their work during exams. Being kind, nice and patient are the…

By tailoring the instruction to meet the student's individual needs, a tutor can ensure effective learning. Creating a safe and encouraging space where students feel…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. I am able to connect to the students. I am young and fun and even ride a motorcycles I play guitar and most games kids no play allowing em to…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring, especially when…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to genuinely care about the student. When a student feels supported and encouraged, they're more likely to stay motivated and engaged. A tutor can give personalised learning experience to students where in the student gets the attention individually which he or she is not able to get in a classroom. Also, a tutor can help in boosting the confidence and morale of the students. They help in building learning skills as well. As a tutor, I believe I have strong communucation skills…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is remove some of the stigma the student already holds towards the subject. Often, students come to tutors due to their inability to study effectively and building up the difficulty of the subject in their head. The most important thing a tutor can do is show the student how to study effectively and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a study routine and to teach them how to study efficiently. Develop their love/passion for a particular subject/field. For young minds, effective tutoring/teaching is extremely important as it makes them aware of their career options and shapes them for good future prospects. When tutoring is improper, a student might quickly lose interest in a subject area which otherwise they may prove to be good at. I…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
