Being a good listener and adjusting to what I think is best for them for me is very important. Some students may be fully motivated to do the best they can and I can therefore assign them with homework, whilst also ensuring they don't feel either overwhelmed or not receiving enough, which therefore requires communication. The next important thing…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is to provide the student with deep understanding of concepts so that the student can approach future challenges with the confidence that they can work through it on their own, even if it is unfamiliar. There is so much more to mathematics than just memorisation as so many people believe, they key is…

One main thing I realised was important for a maths tutor is to not expect the student to learn/understand things in the exact same way you do. Being open to hearing how a student learns best and being able to vary the teaching style is vital. I think I am quite adaptable and can explain singular concepts in many different ways depending on which…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do is to teach the student about any and all areas that the student have doubts or concerns with as well as reinforcing confidence for the student particularly in the weeks the follow before an exam. I am articulate in my language, know content well and am able to explain complex and bizarre…

I believe that the most important thing that a maths tutor can do for a student is listen to/watch for what they're struggling with most, and focus on that. Optimising the time you have with them will make sure that they can improve more quickly. I believe that my strengths as a tutor include my enthusiasm and passion for mathematics, and I try to…

One of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is give them a personalised teaching experience. Often there are other factors at play in the progress of a student's learning than just their mental ability. Being able to recognise and connect to the child will open up numerous learning pathways to allow them to reach their full…

A tutor needs to provide their student with support, tools, skills and most importantly understanding of how they can effectively approach their studies and achieve the best possible results they can. A tutor should also make their student feel comfortable, creating a sense of trust between them and allowing for more effective tutoring sessions.…

I think the most important thing is persistence. If the tutor isn’t motivated to help the student, the student won’t be motivated either. I also think it’s necessary for a maths tutor to try to explain things in different ways with patience ensuring the student understands. I am very passionate about maths, I am also very persistent and have…

Listen. I think it is pivotal for a maths tutor to be able to listen to the student. Be it regarding concepts or content, or just a tutors teaching style. Listening and responding to feedback is essential. Determination. When teaching a student something for the first time, it can be very difficult for them to understand a concept. So, as a tutor,…

Foster self-confidence in their subject areas, as the main hurdle many students face, is self-doubt in their ability, which causes them to give up on their courses. I know the content very well and have helped many of my peers overcome things they don't understand in the syllabus. So I am familiar with many of the common problems students face in…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is targeting a student's goal in a subject, whether that be just passing or scoring 100%, and teaching them at that level, whilst providing that extra push to potentially help them succeed above these goals. In doing so, I believe this allows students to engage more with the work and see strong…

It's the responsibility of a maths tutor to meet students where they are at. Tutors should come to learn the boundaries of what their students do and do not understand and create structure and context for pushing those boundaries to ultimately envelop the knowledge they need to succeed. This can sometimes mean "back-filling" missing knowledge or…

I think the biggest benefit a maths tutor can have is to help instill in a student a sense of confidence in their ability to learn. Regardless of how much subject matter a student is able to retain, they will have a lot of learning to do beyond when they are being tutored, so I believe it is at least as important for students to be ‘learning how…

Inside Lovett BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia worked through ratios and rates of change, using worded problems to reinforce practical understanding.

For Year 11, Ben focused on linear relationships and solving simultaneous equations, tackling challenging questions from his school week.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sophie reviewed financial mathematics topics such as simple and compound interest and depreciation, drawing on HSC sample questions for targeted exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student worked quickly through algebra, but the tutor noted "careless errors crept in when not taking time to understand the question before starting."

In Year 11 exam practice, a reluctance to work without notes meant that confidence dropped on unfamiliar normal distribution problems—timed revision highlighted gaps when notes were set aside.

One Year 8 session saw a student missing subtle differences between similar worded questions, leading to repeated confusion about which technique applied.

Moments like these led to extra minutes spent re-reading or correcting instead of building fluency with more challenging tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Lovett Bay tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to make frequent algebra errors; after some focused practice, he now uses his improved skills accurately in multi-step problems and even chose the right method independently.

A high schooler in another session arrived fully prepared for the first time, bringing specific questions she'd struggled with—showing new initiative instead of waiting passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student surprised their tutor by remembering content from last week and asking for extra problems on it, where previously they needed reminders just to recall key steps.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Vibhuti has been good so far, very nice and punctual. My daughter seems to get along with her well and I imagine they will get more productive as the time passes.

So far, so good with Jie tutoring Charlie. Jie is professional, organised, and has warm and friendly nature.

We are extremely happy with our daughters tutor Martha - as is our daughter. Martha is always on time, friendly but professional. Martha is definitely helping with confidence issues & strategies for exam technique.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Avalon Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke's Grammar School, Bayview Campus.
