The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where the student can learn at their own pace and also feel free to ask questions. I am very friendly and approachable. My students always feel free to be themselves around me. I also do not use jargon, and try to explain concepts using the simplest words possible. I make the…

A tutor should be able to boost a student's confidence by providing them with the relevant knowledge needed to do well in their tests and exams. It is also important for the tutor to be compassionate with the students. I am compassionate with the students as I am willing to explain difficult topics until they understand without getting frustrated.…

I think it is extremely important for a tutor to be adaptable. Different students have differing learning styles and needs, and therefore, to help different students, you need to be able to tailor your tutoring to individualised approaches. Furthermore, rather than just giving the children the answers, as a tutor it is important to be able to help…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to not give up on the student. While it is rewarding when students improve, some can take a while before they can overcome their learning curve. It is important to be patient and work together as a team to help them achieve better results. I try to think outside the box and tailor my lessons to the…

A tutor can make a student stress free by making learning so easy and interesting , that a student enjoy learning rather than running away from it. And obviously achieve good grades. I can make a boring subject interesting to any student as I make use of properties and imagination to teach the topics and make learning a 'fun learning'. I…

I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

I feel the most important thing for any tutor is to be able to communicate with its student effectively. A tutor should not make an assumption that just because students do not have any questions, they are understanding the topic. A tutor must be able to approach problems/concepts in different ways until they find the best way that the kid understands. Teachers have method that suit the whole class, whereas tutors must be able to look deeper into the specific areas a kid is struggling in and answer their questions that take longer and more practice. Tutors must be able to…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a strong support system so that they can confidently ask for help and not feel discouraged when they don't understand a concept. Inside MacleodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amanat explored water transport in plants, diving into xylem function and then linking this to atomic theory and basic chemical bonding.

In Year 10, Leah focused on calculating moles using both n=m/M and n=N/Na formulas, practising with worded chemistry problems to build confidence in rearranging equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Amanat reviewed the stages of photosynthesis—light-dependent and light-independent reactions—clarifying inputs and outputs for each step using summary diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, one student left several answer spaces blank during a tutorial, seeking clarification before attempting any response. As the tutor observed, "it will be more valuable for her to first attempt an answer (however imperfect), and then for us to discuss it together." This avoidance of initial attempts may limit exam performance, where immediate feedback isn't available.

In Year 8 Maths, another student often forgot to complete homework tasks—recently missing practice on fractions—which meant less opportunity for targeted feedback and skill consolidation. Hesitation or missed practice translated into gaps during class discussion and revision.

Recent Achievements

One Macleod tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 biology student who, after previously waiting for help when stuck, took initiative by researching answers to her homework independently and arrived at the next session ready to explain what she'd learned.

Meanwhile, a high school chemistry student came prepared with specific questions about practice problems she'd tried solo—something she hadn't done before—which led to more focused discussions together.

In a younger session, one primary student started using diagrams to break down tricky multiple-choice maths problems rather than guessing, helping her confidently eliminate wrong answers herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Macleod College.
