The most important thing is to keep calm and listen to them. As a tutor you can never lose your calm irrespective of how many times your student makes the same mistake. You might have to repeat yourself hundreds of times, but that shouldn't be a problem. It is important to understand their questions and respond to them accordingly. It is also…

What is most important is to be able to cultivate self-confidence within the student when it comes to facing questions and tasks on their own; to let them believe they can face any challenge without fear or trepidation. Being able to get across difficult and abstract concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand for the…

First of all tutor behaviour with students. If tutor are very strict students can not share their problem due to fear however tutor can not behave very friendly because sometimes student can rude with tutor if we are very friendly. Tutor should behave politely with them. Second is teaching style. Another one is practising and normal…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is assessing their strengths and weaknesses before delving into topics, ensuring they are able to provide help where they need it. It is also important for tutors to be able to instill confidence in a student and help them develop effective study habits that they can use beyond the subject…

By far the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they have a strong base knowledge of the subject by explaining and approaching ideas in ways that they understand and can use practically. My knowledge of the subject matter (maths and physics) is excellent and I\'ve seen and used a number of different teaching methods in my…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to help students gain confidence and understanding of their subjects, as well as providing them with methods they can utilise for problem solving, particularly when it's an unfamiliar question. I believe a tutor is not sole to enhance the academic excellence of a student, but to help the student to develop personal skills in their character and morals as well. In my opinion, a teacher is the bridge between a child and their growth to become an adult. The personal character traits, morals and ethics they learn from school and teachers…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

Patience is really important for students. Providing positive feedback, reassurance and encouragement, even if they don't quite understand yet. Understanding each and every student is essential as all students don't operate on the same frequency. Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
