I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student's confidence, create a safe space for learning, and help them develop the tools to become independent learners. It's not just about teaching content, it's about helping them believe in their abilities, overcome self-doubt, and find strategies that actually work for them. A…

My strengths as a tutor include patience, especially with children, and a strong ability to empathize with their feelings and challenges. I try and strive to…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student understand in a easy and comfortable way, even if the tutor has to repeat it so many times for them. Another important thing is that all children should not be left behind, as I tutor, he/she should move together at the pace of students and that no one should be left out.…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is help them understand concepts that may seem impossible to them because they can then view learning in a completely different viewpoint. This helps them have an open mind towards learning instead of viewing it as something tedious. As such, being understanding and empathetic…

A tutor can be many things for a student. Not only can they be an avenue where they can learn in a different way which may be the student's way of learning, but also they can be a mentor for them in that they can give different insights and views, as well as being someone who listen, and if wanted, suggestions and advice. I can explain concepts…

Try to help them gain a good, comprehensive understanding of concepts that they don't quite understand as at school, the teacher does not have time to individually help out every student. Inside MarsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lea focused on algebraic techniques, working through expansion and factorisation questions, as well as discussing accuracy and limits of accuracy using examples from homework.

In Year 10, Jack tackled trigonometric identities and proof-based questions to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

For Year 11, Sienna concentrated on solving combinations and permutations problems by breaking down multi-step scenarios, ensuring she could apply these skills to new contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student "didn't do homework," which meant new methods in inequalities were not reinforced outside of lessons—gaps showed up when tackling unfamiliar problems.

In Year 10 trigonometry, a reluctance to ask questions led to guessing answers instead of clarifying confusion; as noted, "she needs to be more active in asking questions."

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly avoided writing calculation steps in vector proofs, leading to sign errors and lost marks.

Another struggled with exam integration tasks due to careless corrections, erasing rather than confronting mistakes—a habit that cost marks under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Marsfield tutor noted that a Year 11 student recently moved from completing almost all homework correctly, showing she now checks her understanding and attempts problems even when unsure.

In a senior session, another high school student improved her correction rate on HSC-style papers—she now revisits mistakes independently and answers more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who previously hesitated to share ideas is now volunteering her thinking aloud during lessons, making visible steps toward greater classroom participation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
