Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. I often explain the solution with step by step method, trying to simplify complex solution, and I often use easier example or simulation in…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. Secondly, being an assistant to help in any task they may deem to difficult to tackle alone, but not doing it for them, instead helping them find the…

Emphasizing the mindset of the student. They too do have mood swings and we need to act accordingly. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel heard and valued. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is create a judgement free zone. We all know the feeling when we have asked someone for help and despite not understanding their clarification say that we do and that everything is fine. A judgement free zone is a space where students will ask questions until they are certain that they…

I believe it's important a tutor offers patience and understanding to the student if they are struggling to understand something. As it doesn't help the student if they feel you're getting frustrated at them. I'm good at explaining how to do an example in various ways to ensure that the student can understand. Some of these can be unique to each…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student understand…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is bring a genuine enjoyment for the subject. 1. A tutor must first believe that every child can succeed. Their confidence in the child alone will be able to shift their attitude towards learning. 2. A tutor must thoroughly understand each student and see them as a whole person, not just a *Mathematics student. 3. This is so that with regular assessments, the tutor can craft a learning…

Local Reviews

Clare is comfortable with Daniel already and has had at least a boost in confidence with having him "on her team".
Bridget, McKinnon

Inside McKinnonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on recognising and naming shapes, as well as exploring equivalent fractions using visual aids.

In Year 9, Ruby focused on solving equations with one unknown and practiced operations with fractions and ratios to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe reviewed the use of trigonometric ratios for right-angled triangles and applied bearings in geometry questions, often working through real-world navigation examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student arrived unprepared—no homework or maths books—leaving the session unfocused and limiting review of subtraction and times tables. As a tutor noted, "he was under prepared for me to be there and once again had no homework or schoolbooks with him for either of us to review."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work was often messy and lacked clear working steps; negative signs were missed during factorising quadratics, which led to repeated calculation errors.

During a Year 11 trigonometry lesson, heavy reliance on notes made it difficult to independently apply bearings concepts when challenged with practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mckinnon recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples now able to solve trigonometric equations independently and draw the corresponding graphs without prompting, even choosing the right method for minimum or maximum points independently.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to use calculators in class, successfully applied Pythagoras's theorem unaided and calculated trigonometric values while working through problems on circular functions.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at shapes is now confidently naming them and identifying fractions once they're explained, finishing a worksheet with no errors this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ormond Primary School.
