Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

I think it's important to truly personalise lessons to cater to students outside interests. In other words, it's important to keep the student engaged and encouraged to keep learning. I think I'm relaxed, fun and easy to talk to. I'm from the United States and have lived internationally for several years, which helps me better understand students…

I view the role of a tutor as more of a assistant to the teacher. I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. It is the tutors role to teaching correct habits and strategies to tackle difficult or…

I believe that the most important things which a tutor can do for a student are these: to stress the need for forward planning and for regular timetables; to encourage where necessary; to break down large tasks into manageable portions; and to clarify hitherto obscure matters. I think that my strengths as a tutor are these: I've shown that I can…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment in which the pupil feels encouraged to ask questions. Without a certain degree of security or familiarity, most kids are too nervous or shy to ask questions and thus are left with a minimalistic understanding of a topic, instead of the deeper understanding they could gain by…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. I think being prepared to explain things in multiple ways to a student until they grasp an idea is crucial to learning. Bridget, McKinnon

Inside McKinnonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on recognising and naming shapes, as well as exploring equivalent fractions using visual aids.

In Year 9, Ruby focused on solving equations with one unknown and practiced operations with fractions and ratios to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe reviewed the use of trigonometric ratios for right-angled triangles and applied bearings in geometry questions, often working through real-world navigation examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student arrived unprepared—no homework or maths books—leaving the session unfocused and limiting review of subtraction and times tables. As a tutor noted, "he was under prepared for me to be there and once again had no homework or schoolbooks with him for either of us to review."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work was often messy and lacked clear working steps; negative signs were missed during factorising quadratics, which led to repeated calculation errors.

During a Year 11 trigonometry lesson, heavy reliance on notes made it difficult to independently apply bearings concepts when challenged with practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mckinnon recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples now able to solve trigonometric equations independently and draw the corresponding graphs without prompting, even choosing the right method for minimum or maximum points independently.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to use calculators in class, successfully applied Pythagoras's theorem unaided and calculated trigonometric values while working through problems on circular functions.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at shapes is now confidently naming them and identifying fractions once they're explained, finishing a worksheet with no errors this week.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We really appreciated Arman‘s efforts and enthusiasm even when Aby was playing up. He is a wonderful teacher!

She is one of the finest tutors I have seen. Her consistency and persistent attitude towards the children growth makes her exceptional. Because of her, my niece developed confidence in all phases of education.

Stephanie our tutor for Loki has been great. Loki is enjoying the sessions and in the short time we have seen him becoming more confident. Truly appreciate your assistance in getting Loki up to speed. Rest assured if I hear of anyone looking for a tutor I will send them your way!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ormond Primary School.
