Foster critical thinking for students. This includes teaching students how to solve questions using alternative solutions instead of just 'remembering the step to reach the answer'. Patience, repetitively explaining and answering students' questions. Alternative thinking, using real-life examples to help students to understand. Encouragement,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them realise the small learning mistakes commonly made that in my opinion are not useful further in life. Namely, learning my heart or just memorising to blurt out a concept without understanding its core only to score good grades. A Tutor should be able to make the student understand…

I believe a tutor is equally responsible for a student's life as their parents and it is very important for a tutor to provide correct and required guidelines according to the student's need. It is also important for a tutor to teach values and discipline along with knowledge to make one a better person in life. I can patiently address students'…

It is one thing to help someone get the correct answer, but it is another thing to change student’s outlook. A positive and confident outlook will increase engagement, which means that the student is more likely to start having success even when the tutor is not present. This is my most important task as a tutor, because it builds independence…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is bring a genuine enjoyment for the subject. When students enjoy what they’re learning, they become more engaged and make faster, more meaningful progress. Beyond that, I think it’s also important for a tutor to build students’ confidence, explain concepts clearly, and provide…

1. A tutor must first believe that every child can succeed. Their confidence in the child alone will be able to shift their attitude towards learning. 2. A tutor must thoroughly understand each student and see them as a whole person, not just a *Mathematics student. 3. This is so that with regular assessments, the tutor can craft a learning…

Tutoring help students to get a better grip on the subject. Tutors can give special attention to their students and can solve their doubts and which they don't get clear in the classroom. Students can get in routine to study a subject. I am very patient, if my students cant solve a problem I find out on which step of the solution they are getting…

A tutor plays a pretty significant role in a student's life. As a tutor, I can try my best to impart as much knowledge as I can to my students. I can provide them with the best of my capabilities right from being punctual, right on time and not only completing the course but also offering a good number of revisions. My strengths as a tutor are as…

I promise on coming to tutorials with preparation, listening to students queries and being ready to provide them all the extra help they need to reach the goal. A great tutor can be a role model to a student, so I will always cherish that and play…

Engage with them in such a way that the student actually wants to be at tutoring sessions. There is no benefit to tutoring sessions where the student has no respect or inclination to listen to a tutor. 1-on-1 or small group tutoring gives the student the attention that they may be lacking from a classroom environment, so this is the perfect…

I would consider some of the important things for a tutor to provide to a student are confidence and self belief. Giving a student the self confidence that they can do this will provide them with the tools to continue improving and getting better. Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

Bridget, McKinnon

Inside McKinnonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on recognising and naming shapes, as well as exploring equivalent fractions using visual aids.

In Year 9, Ruby focused on solving equations with one unknown and practiced operations with fractions and ratios to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe reviewed the use of trigonometric ratios for right-angled triangles and applied bearings in geometry questions, often working through real-world navigation examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student arrived unprepared—no homework or maths books—leaving the session unfocused and limiting review of subtraction and times tables. As a tutor noted, "he was under prepared for me to be there and once again had no homework or schoolbooks with him for either of us to review."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work was often messy and lacked clear working steps; negative signs were missed during factorising quadratics, which led to repeated calculation errors.

During a Year 11 trigonometry lesson, heavy reliance on notes made it difficult to independently apply bearings concepts when challenged with practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mckinnon recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples now able to solve trigonometric equations independently and draw the corresponding graphs without prompting, even choosing the right method for minimum or maximum points independently.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to use calculators in class, successfully applied Pythagoras's theorem unaided and calculated trigonometric values while working through problems on circular functions.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at shapes is now confidently naming them and identifying fractions once they're explained, finishing a worksheet with no errors this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ormond Primary School.
