Ultimately, a tutor should aim to foster independence in students, empowering them to become self-directed learners who can take ownership of their education beyond the tutoring sessions. This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

I acknowledge that passing on knowledge such as how to use Pythagoras is important, I would love to inspire students to love learning and being creative in the way that approaches a math issue. When students grow up, it is not the quadratic equations or math problems that helps them to thrive in higher education and life, but it is the ability to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for the student. Unlike a teacher, the tutor has the luxury of being able to pace shift, and cater to the individual. Thus, taking absolute advantage of this 'power' is of the utmost importance, making sure that you, as a tutor, are meeting the needs of your student. I believe my strengths are…

The most important thing is ensuring you build confidence in a students understanding of the subject as a whole as it is through this that a student would be able to face any questions that may be posed to them and have confidence within themselves that they are able to understand the topics given throughout their learning. Without this, you would…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for their student is give them more personal attention and specific, immediate feedback that isn't always available in the classroom. Having someone who can hone in on things that you personally find difficult and mistakes you frequently make helps boost confidence. I think my main strength as a…

Tutors should be able to build independence and confidence in the student, allowing them to improve their problem solving skills and gain new approaches or strategies to learning. The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. For example, once students feel doubting about the topic they have studied at school, the tutor should explain where the students have not understood and make sure to move on once they understand…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. A tutor’s most important responsibilities are to make learning clear, personalised, and encouraging. Understanding a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style is essential. By genuinely engaging with the student, a tutor can create an environment where learning feels comfortable and motivating - which is why I prefer one-on-one…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

To be patient while teaching new topics to students. It may be frustrating if a student cannot grasp the topic well directly, but the tutor should constantly remember that the students learn at very different speeds and that is okay. A tutor should cater to the students' needs, for example, ask the students on the topics they feel the least…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
