Being patient and flexible. Each child has a different learning style and speed. Therefore tutors need to be able to understand that and try new methods to teach if their current one is not very effective. My strengths as a tutor include being fun. I can teach students in a way that engages them, but I also know when I need to be firm. I am very…

I believe that as a tutor, I have the responsibility of figuring out the problem areas that the students are facing and helping them overcome their problem areas. Along with this, the tutor should be skilled enough to make the topics interesting for the child to understand properly and keep them fully engaged Having a strong research background…

I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to understand the situation of each student and develop a learning plan based on their needs. It is important to approach each situation with understanding and provide clarity on topics that they find difficult. I am an A grade student throughout high school, so I am knowledgeable in a wide range of…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to permanently change the outlook a student has on a subject. If my students can go from viewing e.g. maths as a boring and tedious subject to viewing it as fun and rewarding, I'm succeeding in my mission as a tutor. I am good at making personal connections and introducing novel ways to approach…

I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

I think that helping a student understand the basic concept of what they are learning to ensure that they have a strong foundation for future learning. This may lead to a new appreciation for the subject matter. As well as ensuring that no student remains behind their year level to develop more nuanced future adults. I believe that I am able to…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to ensure that the student truly understands the concepts they are learning. The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to not make them feel like they are incapable of understanding the theories of the subject but rather instill confidence in them that hard work and determination pays off. In addition to helping students understand why and how things are done, mentors must also encourage and be patient with students while they are in the process of achieving. As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

Also, as a tutor due to the one on one time you get with a student you are able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of that student and help them accordingly. A tutor must understand a student first. I also think making a lively session and lightening up the session helps release stress and increase the grasping power of students. A tutor must be a friend and a teacher so that the student is free to express difficulties if there are any. I think I can make understand a concept to a person in the way…

Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
