There are things taught at school that are not always assimilated by some of the students. This is because in school, they follow a standard setting or style of teaching which is not applicable for everyone but only for a certain percentage or average. Tutors are built for this specific reason. Tutors customise and plan a specific program for a…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a maths tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give…

The key things to being a great tutor include understanding, patience and commitment. I believe I have all three attributes and will work hard to improve myself as I take on this new position if given the opportunity. I think my strengths consist of knowing what pace I should be at to teach someone as efficiently as possible. As a current student…

I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Tutors should allow students to articulate exactly where they believe they are struggling, and work towards their students' learning goals at their own pace. My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to tailor my teaching style as per each student's needs. I…

I think transparency and communication would have to be important. Being able to create a safe environment where a student feels able to be transparent with their struggles is essential. As well as making sure there is no judgment when it comes to peoples problems is required to ensure that the student can improve. Clear communication is necessary…

I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
