I main goal for the a tutor is to go in-depth on discussed in the classroom allowing the students to wrap their head around concepts that were once perceived as difficult and challenging. I believe the most important thing as a tutor is to understand the situation of each student and develop a learning plan based on their needs. It is important to approach each situation with understanding and provide clarity on topics that they find difficult. The most important thing I can do for a student is to permanently change the outlook a student has on a subject. If my students can go from viewing e.g. maths as a boring and tedious subject to viewing it as fun and rewarding, I'm succeeding in my mission as a tutor. I am good at making personal connections and introducing novel ways to approach…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make learning fun and not tiring or boring. The subject taught or the way it's taught should always be exciting, even if the test marks are not that high yet. Other than bringing the best out of a student in terms of subject knowledge, a tutor should be able to relate well with the student and help him/her develop an overall personality. A tutor should ignite a sense of purpose by which the student can make logical decisions in life. With a family of math professionals, topics about how math is inclined…

Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
