The most important thing is to make the student understand there is no reason to be disappointed. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to teach a student how to be independent and think critically. If a student can solve a problem on her own after a successful session, my job is well done. Patience , Adaptability, Challenging…

A tutor needs to realize how much support students need and what skills they are lacking. Being supportive is good but students also need to spend effort and work on problems on their own without being too dependent on the tutor. Studying skills for Mathematics is important, and a tutor should know how to help students improve mathematical…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to permanently change the outlook a student has on a subject. If my students can go from viewing e.g. maths as a boring and tedious subject to viewing it as fun and rewarding, I'm succeeding in my mission as a tutor. I am good at making personal connections and introducing novel ways to approach…

I firmly believe that making student's confident about the subject is the most important thing. A tutor is someone who guides the student to the solution also letting the student explore the new entities. It is not like providing the question and the answer at the same time. A tutor must be able to win the heart of the student so the student loves…

Listen to students and figure out their problems. Build a very friendly relationship with them. I have a lot of patience to even repeat the same explanation as many times as the student needs in order for them to understand. I can adapt to the needs of each student and communicate well with them. I am also very good at my time…

I feel teaching a student to critically think, while also developing their inner skill that seperates them for everyone else is a purpose I am very dedicated to. The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging. A tutor could give the best explanation but if the student is unmotivated and lacks confidence in their own ability then they're not going to achieve as much. Another important aspect of being a good tutor is being patient, not every student is going to understand something the first time…

The key to a successful tutor-student partnership is instilling confidence in the student, reducing stress, and catering specifically to the needs of the individual. Answering the questions a student asks as they only ask if they truly do not understand a particular part and as a tutor its our duty to make them understand. A key for tutoring is to have patience to guide someone no matter how slow a person understands the particular subject and I do have that key. Plus, I would take the responsibility making…

A tutor must understand a student first. I also think making a lively session and lightening up the session helps release stress and increase the grasping power of students. Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
